The Mesozoic Era was a very big part of Earth's history. It lasted about 186 million years. Many people call it the Age of Dinosaurs. This is because dinosaurs ruled the land for a long time. 
This era had three periods. First was the Triassic. During this time, the supercontinent Pangaea began to break apart. 



The Mesozoic ended with a mass extinction. This is when many living things die out. A large meteor may have hit the Earth. This event wiped out the non-avian dinosaurs. It also ended the time of many other creatures.
The Mesozoic Era was a huge part of Earth's history. It lasted for about 186 million years. People often call it the Age of Dinosaurs. This is because dinosaurs ruled the land for most of this time. 

This era worked through three different periods. First came the Triassic Period, which lasted from 252 to 201 million years ago. Next was the Jurassic Period, from 200 to 145 million years ago. Finally, the Cretaceous Period lasted from 145 to 66 million years ago. 

Scientists have studied these changes for a long time. A paleontologist named Gideon Mantell once called this the "Age of Reptiles." Later, in 1840, a British geologist named John Phillips proposed the name Mesozoic. 
Many amazing living things appeared during the Mesozoic. Dinosaurs first appeared in the Mid-Triassic. They became the main animals on land by the Late Triassic. 
We can see how the Mesozoic connects to our world today. The era began after a massive die-off called the Permian–Triassic extinction. This event is sometimes called the "Great Dying." The era ended with the Cretaceous–Paleogene extinction event. A large meteor may have hit the Yucatán Peninsula to cause this. This impact created the Chicxulub Crater. This event wiped out many creatures, including all non-avian dinosaurs. It changed the path of life on Earth forever.

The Mesozoic is divided into three distinct geologic periods. The first is the Triassic Period, which lasted from 252 to 201 million years ago. This period began with deserts in the center of Pangaea. The Middle Triassic saw the opening of the Tethys Ocean. The second period is the Jurassic Period, spanning from 200 to 145 million years ago. During this time, the climate became tropical and much more humid. Large seas appeared between the moving landmasses. 
Evolutionary changes defined each period. In the Triassic, the first dinosaurs appeared during the Mid-Triassic. They became the dominant land vertebrates by the Late Triassic. The first mammals also appeared during this time. However, these early mammals remained very small. Most weighed less than 15 kilograms, or about 33 pounds. 
Dinosaurs and other reptiles filled many different roles. In the Jurassic, huge herds of sauropods like Brachiosaurus filled fern prairies. They were often chased by predators like Allosaurus. 

Scientists have worked hard to name and understand this era. In the 19th century, paleontologist Gideon Mantell called it the "Age of Reptiles." He focused on animals like Iguanodon and Megalosaurus. In 1840, the British geologist John Phillips proposed the name "Mesozoic." He studied how different life forms appeared in the stratified crust of the globe. 
The Mesozoic ended with a catastrophic event. The Cretaceous–Paleogene extinction event wiped out about 50% of all genera. This included all non-avian dinosaurs and pterosaurs. Many scientists believe a large asteroid caused this. The impact created the Chicxulub Crater on the Yucatán Peninsula. Large volcanic eruptions, such as the Deccan Traps, may have also contributed to the crisis. This mass extinction changed the world forever. It cleared the way for the Cenozoic Era and the rise of modern mammals.
