People began calling it "Miss Mitchell's Comet" to honor her achievement. To ensure her claim was recognized, she submitted her calculations of the comet's orbit. In 1848, King Christian VIII of Denmark awarded her a gold medal for this discovery. This made her the first American and the first woman to receive such an award in astronomy. Although Francesco de Vico found the same comet two days later, Mitchell was declared the original discoverer.

Following her success, Mitchell took on several important scientific roles. In 1849, she worked for the U.S. Coast Survey at the U.S. Nautical Almanac Office. In 1873, she and her students began taking daily photographs of sunspots. These were the first regular photographs of the Sun ever taken.
