On April 21, 1702, Maria made a major discovery during her nightly routine. Starting her observations at 9 p.m., she identified a comet known as C/1702 H1. Although she was the first to identify it, her husband was credited with the discovery at the time. Gottfried's own notes explain that Maria found the comet while he was sleeping. Despite her discovery, official credit went to Italian astronomers Francesco Bianchini and Giacomo Maraldi. This happened because of primacy rules regarding independent sightings. Nevertheless, Kirch's ability to spot the comet proved her skill as an observer.
Kirch also became a published author, which was rare for women of her era. She wrote her works in German rather than Latin to reach a wider audience. Her publications covered many important topics. She wrote about the Aurora Borealis, which are colorful lights in the sky, in 1707. She also published papers on the conjunction of the sun with Saturn and Venus in 1709. In 1712, she wrote about the approaching conjunction of Jupiter and Saturn. These works demonstrated her deep understanding of the Copernican system, which places the sun at the center of the solar system.
After Gottfried died in 1710, Maria faced significant professional challenges. She petitioned the Royal Academy of Sciences to take over his position. She argued that she was highly qualified through years of practical experience. She had already been preparing calendars for him while he was ill. The famous mathematician Gottfried von Leibniz supported her request. However, the Academy's executive council rejected her. They feared that appointing a woman would set a precedent that might change the social order. Even though she was denied a formal role, the Academy did give her a medal for her astronomical work in 1711.
Maria Margaretha Kirch's life highlights the tension between traditional roles and scientific achievement. While roughly 14% of astronomers in the early 18th century were female, women were almost always excluded from official academies. Her struggle showed that even when women were highly competent, social norms often blocked their progress. She remains a vital figure in the history of science because she proved that women could excel in the most profound doctrines of astronomy. Her legacy is one of persistence in the face of institutional barriers.
