Many mammoths had special ways to stay alive in the cold. The woolly mammoth evolved in Siberia about 700,000 to 400,000 years ago. They had a thick coat of fur to keep them warm. They also had a thick layer of fat under their skin. This fat helped them survive in temperatures as low as -50 °C.

They had small ears and short tails to stop heat from leaving their bodies. They even had a fat hump behind their necks to help with heat.

Scientists have worked hard to learn about these giants. In 1725, Vasily Tatishchev wrote the first scientific paper on them. In 1796, a biologist named Georges Cuvier realized woolly mammoths were a new species. He was the first to say they were extinct.

Later, in 1828, Joshua Brookes gave them the name Mammuthus. Even Thomas Jefferson helped make the word "mammoth" mean something very large.

Mammoths were often much bigger than the elephants we see today. Some species like the steppe mammoth were huge. A large male could weigh up to 12.7 tonnes. They also had very long, spirally twisted tusks. Some tusks grew over 4 meters long and weighed 200 kg.

Their teeth changed as they lived. They grew more ridges, called lamellae, to help them eat tough grass. Early species had only 8 to 10 ridges on their teeth.

We can see how mammoths changed by looking at their history. The first mammoths appeared in Africa about 6 million years ago. They moved into Eurasia by about 3.2 million years ago.

The evolutionary path of the genus *Mammuthus* is marked by significant physical changes. Early species like *Mammuthus subplanifrons* appeared in southern and eastern Africa around 6 million years ago. As mammoths moved into Eurasia via the Sinai Peninsula around 3.2 million years ago, they began to adapt to new environments. One major adaptation involved their teeth. To handle a shift from browsing plants to grazing on tough grasses, their molars developed more enamel ridges, called lamellae.

While early species like *M. rumanus* had only 8 to 10 lamellae, later woolly mammoths had between 20 and 28. This change helped them grind abrasive vegetation more effectively.

Different mammoth species developed unique physical traits based on their habitats. The steppe mammoth, *Mammuthus trogontherii*, was a massive creature. Mature males could reach heights of 4.2 meters at the shoulder and weigh up to 12.7 tonnes. In contrast, the woolly mammoth, *Mammuthus primigenius*, was smaller and built for the Arctic. They stood about 2.8 to 3.15 meters tall and weighed between 4.5 and 6 tonnes.

Some species even experienced insular dwarfism on islands. For example, *Mammuthus creticus* on Crete grew to be only about one meter tall and weighed roughly 180 kilograms.

Survival in freezing climates required specialized biological mechanisms. The woolly mammoth evolved several adaptations to manage extreme cold, which could reach −50 °C. They possessed a thick coat of fur and a substantial layer of subcutaneous fat.

This fat served as a nutrient store and helped increase muscle mass. They also had small ears and short tails to minimize heat loss. Scientists have even identified a large brown-fat hump behind the neck that may have acted as a heat source. This structure supported the heavy musculature needed for their large bodies.

Human discovery of mammoths has a long and varied history. The name "mammoth" likely comes from the Mansi word *mān-oŋt*, meaning "earth horn," referring to their tusks. Indigenous Siberian peoples had many myths about them, such as the Evenk belief that mammoths dug up the world from the ocean floor. In the 1700s, scientific study began to take shape. In 1725, Vasily Tatishchev published the first scientific paper on them. Later, in 1796, the French biologist Georges Cuvier correctly identified that woolly mammoths were an entirely extinct species.
