The first stage is the egg, which is cream or light green in color. Females lay these eggs singly on the underside of milkweed leaves using a special secretion that acts like glue. An egg is very small, often weighing less than 0.5 mg and measuring only 1.2 mm by 0.9 mm. After three to eight days, the egg hatches into the second stage: the larva, or caterpillar.

The larval stage is divided into five growth periods called instars. Each instar lasts between three and five days depending on the temperature and food. The first-instar caterpillar is pale and almost translucent with a large black head. As it progresses through the second, third, fourth, and fifth instars, it develops striking white, yellow, and black bands.

By the fifth instar, the caterpillar can reach a length of 4.5 to 5 cm. These larvae feed heavily on milkweed, which helps protect them from predators. To eat, they often chew through latex veins in the leaf to relieve pressure.

After the final instar, the caterpillar enters the pupa stage, also known as the chrysalis. The larva seeks a safe location, often traveling up to 10 meters away from its original milkweed plant.
