A tank is a big machine.

Later, new engines and better parts changed things. One type of tank could now do everything. It was fast and strong. It also had a powerful gun.
These are called main battle tanks. They are very important to armies. They often work with other teams. They do not work alone. This makes them very useful in many places.

The formal shift toward the MBT concept was solidified during the Cold War. In 1957, a conference in Quebec between the US, UK, and Canada identified the MBT as the best path forward. 

Modern MBTs are most effective when they operate as part of a larger system.
