Armoured warfare is the use of strong vehicles in war. 

British and French tanks first saw action in 1916 and 1917. They did not work perfectly at first. However, they became much better by 1918. Large groups of tanks helped end the stalemate. This helped end the war.
In the years after the war, leaders had new ideas. Some wanted to use tanks with foot soldiers. Others wanted large groups of tanks to move fast. 
Armoured warfare is a major part of how modern wars are fought. It uses strong vehicles called armoured fighting vehicles to move through battle. These vehicles help troops break through defensive lines that are hard to cross. Many different types of vehicles are used in this way. Some are tanks, which are very strong. Others are infantry fighting vehicles that help foot soldiers. There are also self-propelled artillery units and combat engineers. All these groups work together to move quickly and win battles. 
This way of fighting began during the First World War from 1914 to 1918. At that time, soldiers fought in deep trenches on the Western Front. These trenches made it very hard for anyone to move forward. This led to a stalemate where attacks were slow and very dangerous. To fix this, people developed tanks. These machines used caterpillar tracks to drive over trenches and barbed wire. The thick metal skin also protected the people inside from machine guns. 
Britain and France were the first to build tanks in 1915. British Mark I tanks first fought at the Somme on 15 September 1916. The first French tanks, called Schneider CA, were used on 16 April 1917. At first, these machines did not work as well as leaders hoped. However, British tanks were more successful during the Battle of Cambrai in late 1917. They even broke through the famous German Hindenburg Line. By 1918, many more tanks were being made. Britain made over 2,500 tanks, while France made over 4,400. 
After the war, leaders had many new ideas about tanks. Some thinkers, like J. F. C. Fuller, wanted to use tanks to move deep into enemy lands. In the 1920s, many vehicles were still not very reliable. Engineers worked hard to make better engines and suspension systems. This helped tanks go faster and travel further. The British even formed an Experimental Mechanized Force in 1927. Other countries like the United States and the Soviet Union also started testing their own groups. 
By the 1930s, many nations were building huge armoured forces. The Soviet Union had more tanks than the rest of the world combined. They used ideas from a designer named John Walter Christie to build fast tanks. In France, they made many kinds of vehicles like armoured cars and supply trucks. Germany also began to build its own special branch called the Panzerwaffe in 1936. These different ways of using tanks changed how the world fought. Today, we still see these strong vehicles in many different forms.

France had produced more than 4,400 tanks. In contrast, the German Empire produced only about 20 A7V tanks. 
During the interwar period of the 1920s, military thinkers debated how to use armour. Some leaders, like J. F. C. Fuller, envisioned deep strategic penetrations. They imagined using large groups of tanks to paralyze an enemy's command structure. Other thinkers, like B. H. Liddell Hart, helped spread these theories. However, most mainstream military thought remained conservative. They preferred to integrate tanks into existing infantry and cavalry units. This was partly because early tanks were very unreliable. They had poor engines and weak suspension systems. Engineers worked throughout this decade to improve these technical parts. 
The 1920s also saw the creation of experimental units. The British formed the Experimental Mechanized Force on 1 May 1927. It was led by Colonel R. J. Collins. This unit included tanks, armoured cars, and even self-propelled Birch guns. It practiced mobile operations on Salisbury Plain. Other nations, including the United States and the Soviet Union, also created experimental forces. They often borrowed designs or ideas from British and French vehicles. This period was essential for testing new armoured tactics. 
By the 1930s, the scale of armoured production increased greatly. The Soviet Union underwent a massive industrialisation programme. This allowed them to produce thousands of tanks every year. In fact, the Soviet Union had more tanks than the rest of the world combined. They used the Christie suspension design from American designer John Walter Christie. This helped them build fast tanks in the BT series. Marshal Mikhail Tukhachevsky advocated for a "deep battle" doctrine in the Red Army. Meanwhile, France developed a vast range of specialised vehicles. These included armoured tractors, supply vehicles, and half-tracks.
As political tensions rose, nations organised their armour differently. In 1935, Germany formed three Panzerdivisionen. Most German tanks were eventually grouped into a special branch called the Panzerwaffe. France also created large armoured units, such as Mechanised Corps, in 1934. These corps each contained about 430 tanks. Even with these advancements, many countries could not fully mechanise their entire armies. Most divisions still relied on infantry that did not have motorised transport. Only the Soviet Union equipped an organic tank battalion in every infantry division. This era set the stage for the complex armoured battles of the future.
