A long time ago, the town was for coal mining. An American named John Munro Longyear started it. He named the town Longyear City. Later, the name changed to Longyearbyen.

Longyearbyen is a very special place in the far north. It is the northernmost settlement in the whole world. 
For a long time, the town worked in one main way. It was a company town built for coal mining. Workers would dig coal out of the ground. They used an aerial tramway to move it. This was a system of cables in the air. It carried coal 1.2 kilometers to the port. The town used its own special money for a while. Later, the town changed how it worked to serve more people. It moved from being just for mining to being a place for many different jobs.
An American named John Munro Longyear helped start the town. He arrived in Spitsbergen as a tourist in 1901. He later bought land to start the Arctic Coal Company. 
Many important things happen in Longyearbyen now. It is a center for science and research.

For much of its history, Longyearbyen functioned as a company town. This means the town was built and run primarily to support coal mining. The Arctic Coal Company started mining in 1906 at Mine 1a. They used an aerial tramway to move coal. This system used cables to carry coal 1.2 kilometers to the port. In 1916, a company called Store Norske Spitsbergen Kulkompani, or SNSK, took over operations. SNSK even issued its own banknotes. These notes were at par with the Norwegian krone. The town was originally called Longyear City. It was renamed Longyearbyen in 1926. 
The town has faced significant challenges and destruction. During the Second World War, the German Kriegsmarine targeted the area. On 8 September 1943, German battleships and destroyers bombarded the town. The attack was devastating. Only four buildings survived the bombardment. These included the hospital, the power station, an office building, and one residential building. After the war ended, the community began a period of reconstruction. By 1948, coal production had returned to pre-war levels of 480,000 tonnes per year. The town also had to manage unique environmental issues. Because of the permafrost, bodies in the local graveyard did not decompose. This led to the practice of sending deceased residents to the mainland for burial.
In recent decades, the economy of Longyearbyen has shifted away from heavy industry. Most mining operations moved to Sveagruva during the 1990s. In 2017, SNSK ceased production due to financial losses from market conditions. The last Norwegian coal mine, Mine 7, closed on 30 June 2025. As mining declined, new industries grew to take its place. Tourism and scientific research are now major parts of the local economy. The town has transitioned from a closed company settlement to a modern municipality. The Longyearbyen Community Council has managed the area since 2002. 
Today, Longyearbyen is a global hub for science and technology. Several major institutions are located here. The University Centre in Svalbard, known as UNIS, hosts students studying Arctic conditions. 

Modern infrastructure supports the residents and visitors of the town. Svalbard Airport provides connections to the mainland and beyond. The community includes essential services like the Svalbardbutikken department store. It also features a school, a church, and a swimming pool. Communication is maintained through advanced technology. The Svalbard Undersea Cable System provides a fiber-optic connection to the mainland.
Longyearbyen remains a site of geopolitical interest. Its location makes it important for various nations, including those in NATO and Russia. The town's history shows a move from resource extraction to knowledge and preservation. It has grown from a small group of miners into a complex, multi-use community. It stands as a unique example of human habitation in the extreme environment of the high Arctic.
