Later, the city became part of the Habsburg lands in 1363. Emperor Maximilian I lived there in the 1490s. He helped make the city famous by building beautiful things. One famous building is the Golden Roof.

At this specific location, the river meets the Wipp Valley. This valley provides a vital path to the Brenner Pass. The pass is located 30 km to the south. As of 2024, the city has a population of 132,188 people.

The geography of Innsbruck is defined by its surrounding peaks. To the north lies the North Chain of the Karwendel Alps. One notable peak there is Hafelekarspitze, which reaches 2,334 metres.

To the south, the landscape rises into the mountains of Patscherkofel and Serles. Serles is the taller of these, standing at 2,718 metres. This alpine setting creates a humid continental climate. This means the city has at least one month where the mean temperature stays below 0 °C. The mountains cause larger temperature swings than in much of Central Europe. Winters are often very cold and snowy.

However, a wind called the foehn can sometimes bring warm thaws.

Summer weather in the valley is highly variable and unpredictable. Daytime temperatures can reach 34 °C during hot, sunny periods. Yet, the nights usually remain much cooler, averaging around 12 °C. This high diurnal temperature variation is a result of the alpine influence. The average annual temperature for the city is 10 °C. Spring is a very brief season in this region. While days may start to feel warm, the nights often stay near freezing. This cycle of weather shapes how people live in the valley.

Innsbruck has a history that began in the early Stone Age. The name of the city actually means "bridge over the Inn."

This name refers to its origins as a strategic crossing point. In the 4th century, the Romans established an army station called Veldidena. They built this at Oenipons to protect a major commercial road. This road ran from Verona through the Brenner Pass to Augsburg. The city flourished by serving as a transit station on the Via Imperii. This was a medieval imperial road under the protection of a king. The revenues from this trade helped the city grow.

The city became a major political hub during the Middle Ages. In 1363, Innsbruck came under the control of the Habsburg dynasty. Emperor Maximilian I lived in the city during the 1490s. His presence brought great wealth and culture to the region. He enriched the city with many landmark buildings. One famous example is the Golden Roof.

The Hofkirche, or Court Church, also features a massive monument for him. This includes a cenotaph and bronze statues of his ancestors. In 1429, Innsbruck officially became the capital of Tyrol.

Political shifts changed the city's leadership many times. In the early 19th century, the Treaty of Pressburg moved Tyrol to Bavaria. Later, the Congress of Vienna restored Austrian rule to the city. During the Napoleonic Wars, a leader named Andreas Hofer led a peasant army. They fought against Bavarian and French forces at the Battles of Bergisel. This was a period of great struggle for the local people. Later, during World War II, Nazi Germany annexed Austria in the Anschluss.
