By 1929, Klepper and Company produced 90 foldboats every day. By the mid-1930s, Europe had about 500,000 foldboats in use. Later, the invention of fiberglass and resin composites changed everything. During the 1950s, fiberglass kayaks became much more common. 
Many explorers used kayaks to achieve incredible feats. In 1928, Franz Romer used a sail to cross the Atlantic Ocean. He traveled from the Canary Islands to the U.S. Virgin Islands. He completed this journey in 58 days. Later, Oskar Speck traveled from Europe to Australia. His journey began in 1932 and took seven years to complete. 
Today, kayaks connect human history with modern recreation. They are used for competitive sports like whitewater racing and slalom. They also allow people to observe marine life closely. For example, paddlers can get near sea otters without disturbing them.
