Thousands of years ago, Inuit people made kayaks in the Arctic. They used driftwood or whale bones for the frame. They used animal skin, like seal skin, for the body. The name means "hunter's boat." These boats helped hunters sneak up on animals to fish or hunt.

Today, kayaks are made of many things. You can find boats made of wood, metal, or plastic. Some are made of carbon fiber, which is very light. Some are inflatable, like a big balloon.

It is different from canoeing because of how you sit and how you paddle. In a kayak, you sit low to the water and face forward. Your legs stretch out in front of you. You use a paddle that has a blade on both ends. You pull one side and then the other in a turning motion. Most kayaks have a closed deck to keep water out. Some people also use sit-on-top or inflatable boats instead.

There are many ways to use a kayak today. Some people enjoy whitewater kayaking by going down fast rapids.

Others use them for fishing or for exploring nature. You can go on an ecotour to see dolphins or manatees in shallow bays.

Some people even use kayaks for diving. They paddle to far places where it is hard to walk from the shore. This is a cheaper way to travel than using a motor boat.

Kayaks have a very long history. Thousands of years ago, Inuit people in the Arctic created them. The name literally means "hunter's boat." They built the frames from driftwood or whale bones. They used animal skins, like seal skin, to make the body. These boats were very quiet and helped hunters sneak up on animals.

In the 1740s, explorers met the Aleutians who had many kayak designs. These people were very skilled at hunting sea otters from their boats.

Kayaking became a popular sport for people in Europe. In the mid-1800s, men from Germany and France began kayaking for fun. Adolf Anderle was the first to kayak down the Salzachöfen Gorge in 1931. This event is seen as the start of modern whitewater kayaking. Kayak racing even became an Olympic sport in 1936 in Berlin.

Today, there are more than ten whitewater events in the Olympics.

Modern kayaks are made from many different materials. You can find them made of wood, metal, or plastic. Some are made of fiberglass or very light carbon fiber. There are also inflatable kayaks made of fabric like rubber. These are easy to carry because you can deflate them. Safety is very important when you are on the water. Most kayakers wear a life jacket and sometimes a helmet. They might also use a whistle or a dry suit to stay safe and warm.

Kayaking is the practice of using a kayak to travel across various types of water.

It is a distinct activity that differs from canoeing in specific ways. In a kayak, the paddler sits in a low position facing forward with their legs extended in front. The paddler uses a double-bladed paddle to move. This involves pulling on one side and then rotating to pull on the other side. Most kayaks feature a closed deck to protect the user. However, other styles like sit-on-top and inflatable models are also very popular today.

To understand how a kayak works, one must look at its specialized design and equipment. The paddler uses an offset paddle, which means the blades are tilted. This design helps reduce wind resistance while the other blade is submerged. Safety is a critical part of the mechanism of kayaking. Kayakers use buoyancy aids, or flotation, to create air space that prevents the boat from sinking. A personal flotation device (PFD), commonly called a life jacket, should always be worn. In whitewater settings, a helmet is mandatory. Other tools include whistles for signaling, throwing ropes for rescues, and diving knives for specific risks.

Kayaks are classified by their deck design and the materials used to build them. Cockpit-style kayaks require the paddler to sit with their hips and legs inside the hull. These users often use a spray skirt, or spray deck, to create a water-resistant seal around their waist. This allows for high levels of control during complex maneuvers. Play boats are a short version of this style used for performing tricks. In contrast, sit-on-top kayaks feature an open, shallowly concave deck. These are often used for non-whitewater activities because they allow the user to "roll" to upright themselves if they flip. Some even feature a dry hatch for storage and through holes to drain water.

Materials vary widely depending on the intended use and environment. Traditional wooden kayaks can be built by hand or from kits. Plywood kayaks using stitch and glue methods can be lighter than almost any other material except skin-on-frame. Modern kayaks are often made of fiberglass, polyester, or polyethylene plastic. For high performance, expensive and feather-light carbon fiber is used. Inflatable kayaks are made from lightweight fabrics like PVC or rubber. These are remarkably tough and can be deflated for easy transport. There are also tandem kayaks designed for two or even three paddlers.

The history of the kayak begins thousands of years ago with the Inuit of the northern Arctic. The word kayak literally translates to "hunter's boat." These early builders used driftwood or whale skeletons for the frames. They covered these frames with animal skins, such as seal skin, to create the body. This design provided stealth, allowing hunters to sneak up on animals on the shoreline. In the 1740s, Russian explorers led by Vitus Bering encountered the Aleutians. The Aleutians had developed many designs for hunting and transportation. They were particularly skilled at hunting sea otters, which were a valuable commodity in Europe and Asia.

By the mid-1800s, kayaking transitioned into a sport for Europeans, specifically men from Germany and France. Modern whitewater kayaking is believed to have begun in 1931. That was the year Adolf Anderle first paddled down the Salzachöfen Gorge. Other pioneers include Fridel Meyer, who paddled long distances between Bavaria, England, and Scotland in the early 1930s. Kayaking was a demonstration sport at the 1924 Olympics. It became an official medal sport at the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin.

Today, the Olympics feature more than 10 different whitewater kayaking events.

People use kayaks for many different activities across the globe. Whitewater kayaking involves traversing rapids that range from Class I to Class VI in difficulty. In these environments, paddlers must watch for "strainers," which are pieces of debris that can trap a kayaker.

For recreation, people enjoy ecotourism, paddling through shallow waters to watch dolphins or manatees.

Kayak fishing is also a growing activity because it allows for stealth and access to shallow areas. Some even use kayaks for diving, as they are a cheaper way to reach distant sites than using a powered boat.

Beyond simple recreation, kayaking connects to various specialized fields and environments. Surf skis are long, performance-oriented kayaks designed for speed on open water, such as the ocean. Winter kayaking is a specialized activity that requires specific clothing, like dry suits, to prevent hypothermia in cold temperatures. The sport also serves practical roles in search and rescue during floods. While it is a major international watersport, there are still few academic studies on how kayaking affects the daily lives of the public. This leaves much to be discovered about the relationship between the paddler and the water.
