Many people have worked to improve these vessels through the years. In 1662, William Petty designed a twin-hulled craft to sail faster in shallow water. Later, in 1876, Nathanael Herreshoff built the Amaryllis, which showed how well catamarans could race.

In 1967, Hobie Alter created the Hobie 14, a famous type of beachable boat.

By 1976, catamarans were even used in the Olympic Games. They have become a very important part of modern sailing.

Some researchers once thought catamarans evolved from outrigger canoes. However, modern scholars believe the opposite is true. They suggest that two canoes bound together evolved from simple raft technologies. Over time, these developed into asymmetric double canoes. Eventually, one hull became a smaller outrigger, leading to the single outrigger and trimaran designs.

In Western history, the development of sailing catamarans was much slower. William Petty designed a twin-hulled craft in 1662 to sail faster in shallow water. It was not a commercial success at that time. Much later, in 1876, Nathanael Herreshoff built the Amaryllis. This boat performed so well at a regatta that catamarans were actually barred from regular sailing classes until the 1970s.

In the mid-20th century, Hobie Alter introduced beachable catamarans like the Hobie 16. This model became extremely popular, with over 100,000 manufactured by 2016.

Modern engineering has introduced advanced versions of the twin-hull concept. One such design is the Small-Waterplane-Area Twin Hull, or SWATH.

A SWATH ship uses twin hulls that remain completely submerged. This design helps reduce resistance caused by waves. Another advanced version is the wave-piercing configuration. This is a widely favored design in modern maritime engineering. These innovations show how the basic idea of two hulls can be adapted for extreme performance.

Comparing the stability of these vessels reveals impressive numbers. A catamaran has a much higher initial resistance to heeling than a monohull. For example, a cruising catamaran fifty feet long requires four times the force to initiate a capsize compared to an equivalent monohull.

While catamarans are faster and more stable, there are trade-offs regarding carrying capacity. Large merchant monohulls are often more efficient per unit of payload. However, high-performance powered catamarans can reach much higher speeds relative to their volume. This makes them ideal for specific tasks like racing or fast transport.
