Bose originally traveled to the University of London to study medicine. However, he had to abandon his medical studies due to ill health. Upon returning to India, Bose faced significant professional challenges due to the social climate of the time. In 1885, he became a professor of physics at Presidency College in Kolkata. At that time, Indian professors were often paid much less than their European colleagues. In fact, his initial salary was only one-third of what a European professor would receive. To protest this racial discrimination, Bose refused to accept any pay for his first three years. He used his own personal funds to support his scientific research projects. Eventually, his excellence was recognized, and his position was made permanent.
In 1917, Bose established the Bose Institute in Kolkata. This was a major milestone because it was the first interdisciplinary research center in Asia. An interdisciplinary center allows scientists from different fields to work together on the same problems. Bose served as the Director of the institute from its founding until his death in 1937. His work helped expand the reach of experimental science across the entire Indian subcontinent. The institute remains one of the oldest and most important research centers in the region.
Bose's work in radio was distinct from the work of other famous inventors like Guglielmo Marconi. While Marconi focused on wireless telegraphy for communication, Bose was interested in the fundamental nature of the waves themselves. He was often critical of the patent system and preferred to share his discoveries openly. He even demonstrated his galena crystal detector in public lectures to help others learn.
