Beyond biology, Hales was a highly practical inventor.

His fame reached across Europe, making him a member of the Academy of Sciences in Paris. He was also a member of the Academy of Sciences of Bologna. His major works were widely translated. His book *Vegetable Staticks* was translated into French in 1735 and Italian in 1750. His second volume, *Haemastaticks*, described his vital work on animal physiology.
While his work was groundbreaking, it was not without controversy. Some people were uncomfortable with his methods of studying animal physiology. The poet Alexander Pope criticized Hales for his experiments on animals. Pope questioned whether humans had the right to kill creatures for scientific curiosity. Despite these criticisms, Hales viewed his work as a way to benefit humanity. He also used his influence for social good. He was involved in philanthropic causes, such as establishing libraries in the American colonies.
Stephen Hales died in 1761 at the age of 84. He requested to be buried under the tower of St Mary's Church in Teddington. Later, a monument was raised for him in Westminster Abbey. His life connected the worlds of religion, social service, and rigorous science. He showed how studying the natural world could lead to life-saving inventions and a deeper understanding of life itself.
