He played a major role in directing Red Army forces on the Eastern Front during World War II. His leadership helped the Soviet Union reclaim much of the territory in Eastern Europe that had been occupied by Axis powers. Konev was known for his military skill and his ruthless approach to command. His career spanned many of the most significant conflicts of the 20th century. He rose from a humble peasant background to become one of the most powerful military figures in Soviet history.

Konev's journey into military leadership began with several distinct stages of training and service. He was born in 1897 in the village of Lodeyno to a peasant family. Before joining the military, he worked as a forester and a lumberjack. In 1915, he was conscripted into the Imperial Russian Army, where he trained in artillery. After the October Revolution, he joined the Bolsheviks and the Red Army in 1918. He served as an artilleryman during the Russian Civil War from 1917 to 1923. Later, he attended the Frunze Military Academy to receive advanced officer training.

This formal education allowed him to hold increasingly senior commands throughout the 1930s.

During World War II, Konev utilized specific tactical methods to achieve victory. One of his most famous methods was the use of maskirovka, which refers to military camouflage and deception. He used maskirovka to hide his army's true strength from the enemy. This included camouflaging defense lines and creating dummy units or supply points. He even used fake air-defense networks to mislead opposing forces. These tactics were highly effective during the Battle of Kursk in 1943. German commanders noted that they had seriously underestimated the strength of his defenses. This deception helped generate a major element of surprise for the Soviet counter-offensive.

Konev's wartime service involved many massive military operations across different regions. He participated in the defense of Moscow and the battles around Rzhev. He also commanded the 2nd Ukrainian Front and the 1st Ukrainian Front. In 1944, his forces were part of the Dnieper–Carpathian Offensive. During this time, his troops helped trap German forces in a "cauldron" or pocket west of the Dnieper river. This event is known as the Korsun–Shevchenkovsky Offensive. For his successes in Ukraine, he was promoted to Marshal of the Soviet Union in February 1944.

As the war neared its end, Konev led several critical offensives in Central Europe. In January 1945, he helped launch a massive winter offensive in western Poland. His armies seized the city of Kraków in January 1945. Soviet sources claim his lightning attack prevented the Germans from destroying the city. In April 1945, his troops advanced toward Berlin alongside the forces of Georgy Zhukov. While Zhukov was given the honor of capturing Berlin, Konev's forces linked up with the United States Army at Torgau.

He served as the commander-in-chief of Soviet ground forces and the First Deputy Minister of Defense. In 1956, he was appointed commander-in-chief of the armed forces of the Warsaw Pact. During this time, he led the violent suppression of the Hungarian Revolution. He also played a role in the political shifts following the death of Joseph Stalin. In 1961, while commanding Soviet forces in East Germany, he ordered the closing of West Berlin during the construction of the Berlin Wall.

Konev's life connects deeply to the broader history of global politics and military science. His career illustrates how personal connections, such as his link to Kliment Voroshilov, could protect a soldier during political purges. His use of deception remains a subject of study for military historians. He lived through the transition from the Imperial Russian Army to the Soviet era. His decisions helped shape the borders and political systems of many European nations. He remained a popular and admired figure in the Soviet Union until his death in 1973.
