He served as a top commander during World War II. He eventually achieved the rank of Marshal of the Soviet Union. This rank is one of the highest possible in the Soviet military hierarchy. Zhukov was a key figure in many of the Red Army's most important victories. He held several high-level positions, including Chief of the General Staff and Minister of Defence. He was also a member of the Presidium of the Communist Party, known as the Politburo.

Zhukov's early life began in a very humble setting.

He was born in 1896 to a poor peasant family in Strelkovka. His father, Konstantin, worked as a cobbler, which is a person who makes or repairs shoes. His mother, Ustin'ya, worked as a peasant labourer. After completing three years of primary education, Zhukov became an apprentice furrier in Moscow. A furrier is a skilled worker who prepares and sews animal skins. While working, he continued his education through night-school classes and reading. In 1915, he was conscripted into the Imperial Russian Army to fight in World War I. During this conflict, he was wounded in action against German forces and earned the Cross of St. George twice.

Following the 1917 October Revolution, Zhukov joined the Russian Communist Party.

He fought in the Russian Civil War as part of a cavalry formation. After recovering from a severe case of typhus, he completed an officers' cavalry training course in 1920. This allowed him to be commissioned as an officer. Throughout the 1920s and 1930s, he steadily advanced through various cavalry command positions. He commanded the 39th Cavalry Regiment and later the 4th Cavalry Division. He also graduated from the Frunze Military Academy in 1930. These years of training prepared him for much larger responsibilities.

In 1939, Zhukov demonstrated his command skills during the Battles of Khalkhin Gol.

This conflict occurred along the border of the Mongolian People's Republic and Japanese-controlled Manchukuo. Zhukov commanded a Soviet army group against Japanese forces. He used a strategy called combined-arms manoeuvre. This involves using different types of military units, such as tanks, artillery, and infantry, together in a coordinated way. He used armoured formations to perform encirclement operations. This victory earned him his first Hero of the Soviet Union award. It also led to his promotion to general of the army in 1940.

During World War II, Zhukov became a central figure in Soviet defense and offense.

In the autumn of 1940, he helped prepare plans for defending the Soviet Union's western borders. In February 1941, Stalin appointed him as the chief of the General Staff. Although he briefly lost this post due to a disagreement with Stalin over the defense of Kiev, he returned to high command. He worked closely with Aleksandr Vasilevsky on major operations. Zhukov was involved in the defense of Leningrad, Moscow, Stalingrad, and Kursk. In January 1943, he was promoted to Marshal of the Soviet Union.

As the war progressed, Zhukov helped lead the Red Army toward final victory.
