He entered politics early by joining the Union of Communist Youth in 1944. He later joined the Communist Party in 1953. By 1965, he was elected to the Central Committee of the Romanian Communist Party. He held roles such as Minister for Youth-related Issues. However, the leader Nicolae Ceaușescu did not fully trust him. 
From 1972 to 1989, Iliescu held various local and administrative roles. He served as vice-president of the Timiș County Council and president of the Iași Council. He also managed the Editura Tehnică publishing house. During this time, the Securitate, which was the secret police, kept a close watch on him. This was because he was in opposition to Ceaușescu's rule. In December 1989, the Romanian Revolution changed everything. 
In May 1990, Iliescu became Romania's first freely elected head of state. He won the presidential election with a massive 85 percent of the vote. This was the largest vote share for a free presidential election in Romania. He served his first term from 1990 to 1996. He later founded the Social Democratic Party (PSD). After his first term, he lost the 1996 election to Emil Constantinescu. Despite the loss, Iliescu conceded the results within hours. This was a significant moment for Romanian democracy. He later returned to the presidency for a second term from 2000 to 2004.
During his second term, Romania took important steps toward international cooperation. In 2004, Romania joined NATO, which is a military alliance. 


In his later years, Iliescu faced serious legal investigations. In April 2018, he was charged with crimes against humanity. The charges involved military measures used during the 1989 revolution. These measures were described as having a diversionary character. The legal process was complex and lasted several years. A judge rejected the case in 2020 due to irregularities. However, the indictment was remade by authorities. In 2023, the Court of Appeals approved a trial for the case.
