He studied political economy at Taras Shevchenko Kyiv State University. By 1980, he was a high-ranking official in the party. However, his ideas began to change during the late 1980s. He started to support the idea of a free Ukraine. 
In 1990, Kravchuk was elected to lead the parliament. This group is called the Verkhovna Rada. He won the election with a huge amount of votes. In 1991, he was chosen as the first democratically-elected president. During his presidency, he made some very big choices. He decided that Ukraine would give up its nuclear weapons. He also worked to make Ukraine a member of NATO. 
Being a new president was a very hard job. The economy in Ukraine faced a major crisis. The gross domestic product fell by 40 percent. This made life very tough for many people. Because of these economic problems, Kravchuk lost his re-election in 1994. Leonid Kuchma became the next president after him. 
Leonid Makarovych Kravchuk was a central figure in the creation of modern Ukraine. He served as the nation's first president from December 5, 1991, until July 19, 1994. 
Kravchuk's early life was marked by significant political and social upheaval. He was born on January 10, 1934, in the village of Velykyi Zhytyn. At that time, the village was part of the Second Polish Republic.

After leaving the presidency, Kravchuk remained a prominent figure in the political landscape. He served as a People's Deputy of Ukraine for the Social Democratic Party of Ukraine (united). From 2002 to 2006, he led a specific parliamentary group within that party. His career represents the complex transition from the Soviet era to a democratic, independent Ukraine. His life connected the old structures of the USSR to the new realities of a sovereign nation.
