Later, he became a professor of administrative law. He taught at the University of Chile and the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile. He also taught civic education and political economy at the National Institute. His academic background helped shape his approach to governance and law.

His political journey started in 1945 when he joined the Falange Nacional. This group later became the Christian Democratic Party of Chile. Aylwin served as its president for seven terms between 1958 and 1989. In 1965, he was elected as a Senator to the National Congress. By 1971, he had become the president of the Senate. During the administration of Salvador Allende, Aylwin led the democratic opposition within Congress. He attempted to find peaceful solutions during a time of intense political crisis.

The most significant era of his career involved opposing the military dictatorship. Following the 1973 coup, the country was led by Augusto Pinochet. Aylwin worked to reunite democratic sectors against this rule. He helped establish the Constitutional Studies Group of 24 to organize opposition. In 1979, he acted as a spokesman against a new constitution. The turning point came during the 1988 national plebiscite.

The existing Constitution gave the military and Pinochet significant power. This made it difficult to restructure the Constitutional Court. However, his administration still changed how power functioned in civil society. He initiated direct municipal elections, which began in June 1992. His government worked to alter power relations in favor of democratic institutions.

Aylwin also focused heavily on economic and social reforms to help the poor. He introduced a tax reform in 1990 that increased tax revenues by about 15%. This allowed the government to raise social spending from 9.9% to 11.7% of the GDP.

Beyond his presidency, Aylwin remained active in promoting justice and ethics. He was a strong supporter of the Chilean National Commission for Truth and Reconciliation. This commission sought to prosecute those involved in human rights violations during the dictatorship. He also founded the Corporation for Democracy and Justice to fight poverty.
