They can be found on almost every continent. Most Hydra live on rocks. They use a sticky foot called a basal disc to stay in place.

These animals are famous for a special power. They can regrow parts of their bodies. This is called regeneration. If you cut a Hydra in half, each part grows into a new animal. The head grows a foot. The foot grows a head. They can even grow from many small slices!

To eat, the Hydra uses thin arms called tentacles. These arms have stinging cells called cnidocytes. Inside these cells are tiny tools called nematocysts.

These animals are shaped like small tubes. They belong to a group called cnidarians. This is the same group as jellyfish. Most Hydras live in places like ponds or lakes. They like to stay attached to rocks. They use a sticky foot called a basal disc to hold on. This disc uses a special fluid to stay stuck. They live on almost every continent on Earth.

To catch food, the Hydra uses its thin tentacles. Each tentacle is covered in tiny stinging cells called cnidocytes. Inside these cells are structures called nematocysts.

They look like miniature light bulbs with a coiled thread inside. When prey touches a tiny hair on the cell, the thread shoots out. This happens because of water pressure inside the cell. The thread acts like a dart with a toxin. This can paralyze small animals like worms or tiny insects. The Hydra then moves the food into its mouth.

Scientists find Hydras very interesting because of their amazing powers. They can regrow body parts through a process called regeneration. If a Hydra is cut in half, it does not die. Instead, the head part grows a new foot. The foot part grows a new head. Even small slices from the middle can grow into whole animals. They also seem to never die of old age. This is because they have many stem cells. These cells constantly renew the body.

In 1758, a scientist named Linnaeus gave the genus its name. He named it after the Hydra from old myths. In the myth, the Hydra was a beast with many heads. If you cut off a head, more would grow back. This is just like the real animal.

Hydras can also make new Hydras through budding. This happens when food is easy to find. A small bud grows on the side of the body. Once it is a tiny adult, it breaks away. A well-fed Hydra can make a new bud every two days.

Even though they stay in one place, Hydras can move. They use two ways called looping and somersaulting. They bend their bodies to move their feet. They can move about 100 millimeters in a single day.

Some Hydras even have special partners. They live with tiny green algae. The algae live inside the Hydra. The algae help the Hydra get food from light. In return, the Hydra keeps the algae safe. This is a very helpful way to live together.

While they are mostly found in ponds or lakes, some live in open water. They are primarily sessile, meaning they stay in one place. A *Hydra* has a tubular body that shows radial symmetry. The body can reach up to 10 mm in length when extended. Its structure is diploblastic, which means it has two main body layers. The outer layer is the epidermis, and the inner layer is the gastrodermis. These layers are separated by a gel-like extracellular matrix called the mesoglea. At the top of the body is a mouth surrounded by one to twelve mobile tentacles.

To capture prey, *Hydra* use highly specialized stinging cells called cnidocytes. These cells are located on the tentacles. Each cnidocyte contains a structure called a nematocyst. A nematocyst looks like a tiny light bulb with a coiled thread inside.

When a trigger hair called a cnidocil is touched, the nematocyst discharges. This discharge is caused by hydrostatic pressure, which is the osmotic pressure exceeding a certain threshold. The cell fires a dart-like thread containing neurotoxins into the prey. This can paralyze small invertebrates like worms or tiny crustaceans.

There are different types of nematocysts used for different tasks. Desmonemes help with prey attachment. Isorhizas have spines inside the capsule, while atrichous isorhizas are spineless. There are also large stenoteles. These use a stylet apparatus to pierce through tough surfaces. Once the prey is caught, the tentacles move it toward the mouth. This process usually takes about two minutes. The *Hydra* can engulf prey more than twice its own size.

In 1758, the scientist Linnaeus named this genus. He chose the name after the mythical Hydra from Greek mythology. In those stories, the beast would grow new heads when severed. Real *Hydra* show similar abilities through a process called morphallaxis. This is a type of tissue regeneration that occurs without cell division. If a *Hydra* is cut in half, the head part grows a new foot. The foot part grows a new head. Even middle segments can regenerate into complete animals.

*Hydra* can reproduce in two different ways. When food is plentiful, they often use asexual reproduction called budding. A section of the body wall grows into a bud. This bud becomes a miniature adult and then breaks away. A well-fed *Hydra* can produce a new bud every two days.

When conditions are harsh or food is scarce, they may reproduce sexually. In this case, ovaries or testes develop from cells in the epidermis. The fertilized eggs develop a tough coating and fall to the bottom to wait for better conditions.

Biologists are fascinated by *Hydra* because they do not seem to age. They are composed of 50,000 to 100,000 cells. These include three specific stem cell populations that constantly renew themselves. This constant renewal is why they do not appear to die of old age. They also have a very simple nervous system called a nerve net. This net consists of a few hundred to a few thousand neurons. It lacks a brain but allows the animal to react to light and touch.
