Most cnidarians have only one opening in their body. This single orifice serves as both the mouth for ingestion and the exit for waste. This body cavity is used for both digestion and respiration.

One of the most famous features of this phylum is the cnidocyte. The name Cnidaria comes from the Greek word for "nettle," referring to these stinging cells.

These specialized cells contain an organelle called a nematocyst. When a tiny hair called a cilium is triggered, the cell fires a harpoon-like structure. This mechanism can inject venom to subdue prey. Some species use spirocysts, which have sticky hairs to entangle victims instead of injecting venom. Other species, like tube anemones, use ptychocysts to build protective tubes.

Cnidarians generally exist in two distinct body forms. The first is the polyp, which is a sessile form that stays in one place. The second is the medusa, which is a free-swimming form.

Both forms are radially symmetrical, meaning their parts are arranged around a central axis. Medusae often use jet propulsion to swim. Scientists classify most cnidarians into four main groups. Anthozoa includes sea anemones and corals, which are mostly sessile. Scyphozoa consists of swimming jellyfish. Cubozoa includes the box jellies. Hydrozoa is a diverse group containing freshwater species and colonial swimmers like the Portuguese man o' war. Recently, Staurozoa has been recognized as its own class. Even parasitic groups like Myxozoa were only firmly recognized as cnidarians in 2007.

Cnidarians do not have a centralized brain. Instead, they coordinate their activities using a decentralized nerve net.

They use simple receptors and specialized parts called rhopalia to sense gravity. Some free-swimming species in the Cubozoa and Scyphozoa classes have statocysts to help with balance. Some even possess simple eyes. This allows them to navigate their environments without a complex nervous system.

These animals have a very long history on Earth. Fossils have been found in rocks from the Ediacaran period.

Cnidarians play vital roles in the food web. They prey on organisms ranging from tiny plankton to animals much larger than themselves. Many corals also live in a symbiotic relationship with zooxanthellae. These are photosynthetic organisms that live inside the coral polyps.

In return, the corals provide a home. This partnership allows reef-forming corals to thrive in warm, shallow marine waters. While many stay in the shallows, other cnidarians live in polar regions or at great depths.
