In Greek mythology, Hydra is linked to a many-headed monster. Legend says Hercules killed the monster with help from his nephew, Iolaus. Iolaus used a torch to sear the necks so heads would not regrow. In Chinese astronomy, these stars fall within the Azure Dragon and Vermilion Bird.
Deep-sky objects in Hydra offer a look at the wider universe. The Southern Pinwheel Galaxy, or M83, sits on the border of Hydra and Centaurus. 
Many different types of galaxies populate this region of space. NGC 3923 is an elliptical galaxy found in Hydra. 
Hydra also connects to local solar system events. The Sigma Hydrids is a very active meteor shower. It peaks every year on December 6. This shower is caused by Comet Nishimura, which was discovered in 2023. Additionally, the star GJ 357 is quite close to our Solar System. It is only 31 light-years away. This star has three confirmed exoplanets in its orbit. One planet, GJ 357 d, is considered a "Super-Earth." It sits within the circumstellar habitable zone. From nearby stars to distant galaxies, Hydra is a massive window into space.
