It sits at a vital geographic junction. The city marks the southern terminus of the Grand Canal. It also sits at the head of Hangzhou Bay. This location has made it a center for trade and culture for many centuries. Today, it is known for both its ancient heritage and its modern technology. The city holds three UNESCO World Heritage sites. These include the West Lake Cultural Landscape, the Grand Canal, and the Archaeological Ruins of Liangzhu City.

The history of this region reaches back thousands of years. The Hemudu culture lived in the Yuyao area southeast of Hangzhou seven millennia ago. During this period, rice was first cultivated in southeast China. Around five thousand years ago, the jade-carving Liangzhu culture inhabited the area near the present city. In 222 BC, the First Emperor of the Qin established Qiantang as a county. Under the Sui dynasty, the area became the seat of the prefecture of Hang. Over time, the city took on the name Hangzhou. This followed a common convention used in other cities like Guangzhou and Fuzhou.

Water management has always been essential to the city's survival. The Grand Canal, which connects to Beijing, reached its full length by 609.

West Lake, a central feature of the city, has required careful maintenance. During the Tang dynasty, the governor Bai Juyi noticed the lake was drying up. A collapsed dyke caused severe droughts for local farmers. Bai Juyi ordered the construction of a stronger, taller dyke and a dam to control water flow. He also planted willows and trees along the banks to create a landmark. Later, in 1089, the poet Su Shi used 200,000 workers to build a long causeway. This causeway was constructed using mud dredged from the lake bottom.

Hangzhou has served as a major political capital several times. It was the capital of the Wuyue Kingdom from 923 to 997. It later became the capital of the Southern Song dynasty from 1138 to 1276.

The imperial family moved there after the Jurchens captured the northern capital of Kaifeng. To make it a permanent capital, the government expanded the imperial palace. They added roofed alleyways and extended the palace walls. The city was protected by massive walls made of stone and tamped earth. These walls were 30 feet high and 10 feet thick at the base. They covered an area four miles north to south and one mile east to west, featuring 13 gates.

During the Southern Song dynasty, Hangzhou was a global powerhouse. It is believed to have been the largest city in the world between 1180 and 1315, and again from 1348 to 1358.

Some historians estimate the population exceeded 2 million people. The city was a bustling center of trade and entertainment. It even hosted Arab merchants who arrived via oceangoing trade passages. The city was so wealthy that the explorer Odoric of Pordenone called it the greatest city in the world. The Moroccan traveler Ibn Battuta also visited in 1345. He described the city's charm, its green hills, and its beautiful wooden ships with silk awnings.

Living in such a large, dense city presented specific challenges. Because many buildings were made of wood and built in multiple stories, fire was a constant threat. Major fires destroyed large parts of the city in 1208, 1229, 1237, and 1275. The 1208 fire was particularly devastating, burning for four days. It destroyed 58,097 houses within a three-mile diameter. To fight this, the government created an elaborate fire-fighting system. They built watchtowers and used lantern and flag signals to direct responses. They also employed more than 3,000 soldiers specifically for firefighting tasks.

In the modern era, Hangzhou has transformed into a global hub for innovation. It is home to major corporations such as Alibaba Group, Ant Group, DeepSeek, Geely, and NetEase.
