In 2023, the city had 5 million registered residents. Suzhou is also a leader in modern science and technology. The Nature Index 2025 ranks it as the 33rd global city by scientific output. The city contains many high-tech enterprises, with over 16,000 existing as of 2023. This economic activity contributes roughly 20% of the total GDP for Jiangsu Province.
The administrative structure of Suzhou is divided into several distinct parts. The Gusu District serves as the historic urban core and the "Old Town." To the east, the Suzhou Industrial Park (SIP) acts as a major economic zone. This park was created through a partnership between China and Singapore in 1994. 

Suzhou remains a center for higher education and cultural preservation. It is home to institutions like Soochow University and Xi'an Jiaotong–Liverpool University.
