Grozny is the capital city of Chechnya, which is located in Russia.

The city's story began with a military fort. General Aleksey Petrovich Yermolov founded the fort in 1818. It was built as a Russian military outpost on the river. During its early years, the fort was a key defense center. As time passed, the military use of the fort ended. The area then became a town and was officially named Grozny. This change happened after the Russian Empire took control of the region.
In the early 1900s, the city changed because of oil. People discovered large oil reserves in the ground nearby. This led to a very fast growth in industry. Famous people like Alfred Nobel helped develop the oil business. British companies also played a big role in this work. By 1893, the city was part of a large railway network. This helped the city become a major center for making fuel.
The city has faced many hard times in its history. During World War II, Germany tried to take the city for its oil. Later, in 1944, the Soviet government forced Chechen people to leave. They were sent far away to Siberia. Many people died during this difficult time. In 1957, the Chechen people were finally allowed to return home. This return caused many changes in how the city worked. It also led to many years of tension between different groups of people.
Today, Grozny is a large and busy city. The population was 328,533 in the year 2021. This is more than it was in 2002, but less than in 1989. The city has many useful places for travelers. It has a large airport and a railway station.

Grozny is the capital city of Chechnya, a republic located within Russia.
The origins of the city began as a military outpost. General Aleksey Petrovich Yermolov founded the fortress of Groznaya in 1818. This fort served as a prominent defense center during the Caucasian War. The fortress was a site visited by famous Russian cultural figures. These included the writer Leo Tolstoy and the poet Mikhail Lermontov. As the Russian Empire annexed the region, the military importance of the fort declined. The settlement was eventually granted town status and renamed Grozny. This transition marked the shift from a military stronghold to a civilian town.
In the early 20th century, the discovery of oil reserves transformed the city. Grozny became a major geographical center for Russia's network of oil fields. The development of the oil industry attracted international attention and investment. Alfred Nobel helped develop the local oil industry. Members of the Rothschild family were also involved in this growth. British companies played a significant role in the industry starting in 1893. An English engineer named Alfred Stuart completed the first well in 1893. This well was part of the largest oil field in the Caucasus outside the Baku district. By 1900, eleven different firms had drilled 116 wells in the area. This industrial boom caused the population to nearly double between 1897 and 1913.
The city's industrial importance made it a strategic target during World War II. During the summer of 1942, the German Fall Blau operation targeted Grozny. The German military sought to capture the city to secure its oil supplies. The failure to take Grozny was a major defeat for Germany. This failure was a factor in the outcome of the Battle of Stalingrad. In 1944, the Soviet government carried out a mass deportation of the Chechen and Ingush people. They were falsely accused of collaborating with Nazi Germany. Internal NKVD data shows that 144,704 people died between 1944 and 1948. This represented a death rate of 23.5 percent for the deported groups. The European Parliament recognized this act as genocide in 2004.
Following the deportation, Grozny remained a predominantly Russian city for several years. In 1957, the Chechen-Ingush ASSR was restored and Chechens were allowed to return. This return caused massive disruptions to the social and economic systems of the city. A cycle of ethnic conflict developed between the returning Chechens and the existing Russian population. Both groups believed the other's presence was illegitimate. During the Soviet era, the city saw significant architectural development. Stalinist-style buildings and high-rise apartment blocks were constructed. The city also developed a large airport and university buildings.

The collapse of the Soviet Union led to a period of intense political instability. Grozny became the seat of a separatist government led by Dzhokhar Dudayev. This era was marked by the First Chechen War and heavy military conflict. The Russian military engaged in extensive bombing of the city. This caused many non-Chechen residents to flee the area. By the 1990s, the city had become a central site of struggle between Russian and Chechen forces. The city's population has fluctuated greatly due to these conflicts. In 1989, the population reached almost 400,000 people. By the 2021 census, the population was recorded at 328,533. This is an increase from the 210,720 recorded in 2002, but lower than the 1989 figure.
Today, Grozny serves as a modern administrative and industrial center. The city maintains important infrastructure for travel and commerce.
