In fact, it is one of the driest cities in Europe. Most of the rain falls during the six hottest months. The winters are the opposite, with cold temperatures. Astrakhan has a very long and busy history. It was once the capital of the Astrakhan Khanate. This was a land ruled by the Astrakhan Tatars. A famous traveler named Ibn Battuta visited the area in the 1300s. He called the Volga River the Athal and said it was one of the greatest rivers in the world. The climate in Astrakhan is classified as a continental cold semi-arid climate. This means the region experiences very dry conditions and extreme temperature shifts. It is one of the driest cities in Europe. Rainfall is scarce but is distributed relatively evenly throughout the year. However, 58% of precipitation occurs during the six hottest months. Astrakhan has a complex and ancient history. The area once contained the capitals of Khazaria and the Golden Horde. The name Astrakhan is a corruption of Hashtarkhan. This name comes from Haji Tarkhan, which is mentioned in medieval writings. In the 1300s, the famous Berber traveler Ibn Battuta passed through the region. He traveled through the Golden Horde along the Volga River. He called the river the Athal and described it as one of the greatest rivers in the world. During his travels, he noted that the Khan stayed in Astrakhan during the winter. To help people travel over the frozen river, Özbeg Khan ordered bundles of hay to be laid on the ice.

The city's location changed due to various conquests. Tamerlane burnt the medieval settlement to the ground in 1395. From 1459 to 1556, the area was the capital of the Astrakhan Khanate. This state was ruled by the Astrakhan Tatars. In 1556, Ivan the Terrible conquered the khanate. In 1558, the city was moved to its present site. A new fortress, or kremlin, was built on a steep hill overlooking the Volga.

This year is traditionally considered the foundation of the modern city. The Kremlin was built between the 1580s and 1620s using bricks from Sarai Berke.

Throughout the 17th century, Astrakhan became a "Russian gate to the Orient." It was a vital trading center on caravan and water routes. Many merchants from Armenia, Safavid Persia, and Mughal India settled there. This gave the city a cosmopolitan and diverse character. In the 18th century, Peter the Great built a shipyard in the city. He used Astrakhan as a base for operations against Persia. Later, Catherine the Great granted the city important industrial privileges. The city also served as a base for the first Russian ventures into Central Asia in 1724.

The 20th century brought significant challenges to the region. In 1919, following a failed workers' revolt, between 3,000 and 5,000 people were executed by the Cheka. During World War II, the city was a target during the German invasion. In 1942, German forces reached points as close as 35 km to the city. The Luftwaffe conducted air raids on the city's oil terminals and harbor installations. Despite these hardships, Astrakhan remained a vital hub. In 1943, it was designated as the seat of a Soviet oblast.

Today, Astrakhan is a center for fish processing. This industry has been active for nearly 400 years. The fish market is a massive part of the local economy. The city is also a place of great ethnic diversity. While 78.8% of the population is Russian, many other groups live there. These include Kazakhs, Astrakhan Tatars, and Azerbaijanis.
