She grew up on a farm in Virginia. She worked hard to study math. She earned a degree from Virginia State University. Later, she earned a master's degree too.
In 1956, she began working at a naval base. She was a computer programmer. She used math to study the shape of Earth. She looked at how gravity and tides change Earth's shape. This shape is called a geoid.

To build these models, West had to process immense amounts of data using early computing technology. In the early 1960s, she participated in a major study regarding the motion of the planets Pluto and Neptune. This project was massive in scale, requiring five billion individual calculations. These tasks were performed on a mainframe computer using physical punched cards to input data. Later, she analyzed satellite altimeter data from NASA's Geodetic Earth Orbiting program. This work helped her create more accurate models of the planet's true physical form.
West's expertise focused on the distinction between a perfect sphere and the actual Earth. She worked to define the geoid, which is an ellipsoid shape with specific undulations. The Earth is not a smooth ball because gravity and tidal forces create variations. To generate an accurate geopotential model, West used complex algorithms. These mathematical rules accounted for how gravitational and tidal forces distort the Earth's shape. 
Her career progressed through several important technical stages and projects. She became the project manager for the Seasat radar altimetry project. Seasat was the first satellite capable of remotely sensing the oceans from space. West also managed the processing systems for satellite data analysis at the Naval Proving Ground. In 1986, she published a 51-page technical report titled "Data Processing System Specifications for the Geosat Satellite Radar Altimeter." 
Gladys West's journey began in a rural community in Dinwiddie County, Virginia. She was born on October 27, 1930, into an African American farming family. Her family worked as sharecroppers, and she spent much of her childhood on their small farm. West viewed education as a vital pathway to a different life. In 1948, she graduated as the valedictorian of her high school class. This achievement earned her a full scholarship to Virginia State University. There, she studied mathematics, a field that was primarily dominated by men at the time.
Despite her brilliance, West faced significant systemic challenges throughout her 42-year career. She began working at the Naval Proving Ground in 1956 as a computer programmer. At that time, she was only the second Black woman hired and one of only four Black employees. She encountered many hardships due to the racism prevalent in society. For example, her white coworkers often received praise and privileges that she was denied. Much of her most important work was classified as secret. Consequently, even her own children did not realize her role in creating GPS technology.
Today, West's legacy is recognized through numerous prestigious global honors. In 2018, she was inducted into the United States Air Force Hall of Fame. This honor recognized her as part of the "Hidden Figures" who performed computing for the military. She also received the Webby Lifetime Achievement Award for her work in satellite geodesy. In 2021, the Royal Academy of Engineering awarded her the Prince Philip Medal.
