Katherine's journey with math began very early in her life. She was born in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia, in 1918. She showed a great talent for numbers when she was a young child. Because of laws at the time, she had to travel to Institute, West Virginia, for school. She entered high school when she was only ten years old. She graduated from college at age 18 with degrees in mathematics and French. She even attended graduate school at West Virginia University.

She began her career at a place called NACA in 1953. This group later became NASA. During this time, she worked in a section for African-American women. Even though there were laws that kept people separate, she focused on her important research. In 1961, she helped calculate the flight for Alan Shepard. Later, astronaut John Glenn asked her to check the numbers for his orbit. He trusted her math more than the new electronic machines. She also worked on the Apollo 11 flight to the Moon in 1969.

As a human computer, she performed the complex manual calculations required for orbital mechanics. This field of science studies how objects move in space under the influence of gravity. Her 33-year career spanned both the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA) and NASA. She played a historical role as one of the first African-American women to work as a NASA scientist. Her precision helped turn the dream of space travel into a reality.

Johnson’s work involved several highly technical processes to ensure mission success. First, she calculated trajectories, which are the specific paths that a spacecraft follows through space. She also determined launch windows, the exact moments when a rocket can safely depart. For Project Mercury, she calculated emergency return paths to keep astronauts safe. During the Apollo 13 mission, she helped develop a one-star observation system. This method allowed the crew to determine their location by looking at stars. This was necessary because the mission had to be aborted, requiring a new path back to Earth.

Her career saw the transition from human-led math to digital computing. In the early years, she worked in the West Area computing section at the Langley Memorial Aeronautical Laboratory. This group was composed of African-American mathematicians. During this era, racial segregation laws required Johnson to use separate facilities from her white colleagues. However, she focused intensely on her research and the mission at hand. When NASA began using electronic computers, Johnson’s reputation for accuracy remained essential. Astronaut John Glenn specifically requested that she verify the computer's numbers before his orbit flight. He refused to fly unless she confirmed the calculations were correct.

Johnson’s mathematical journey began with extraordinary speed in West Virginia. Born Creola Katherine Coleman in 1918, she showed intense mathematical ability as a child. Because of local limitations for African-American students, she attended high school in Institute at age ten. She graduated from West Virginia State College at age 18 with degrees in mathematics and French. She later became the first African-American woman to attend graduate school at West Virginia University. This was made possible by the 1938 Supreme Court ruling in Missouri ex rel. Gaines v. Canada. This ruling required states to provide equal higher education opportunities for Black students.

Her contributions touched almost every major era of American spaceflight. She calculated the trajectory for Alan Shepard’s 1961 flight, the first American in space.

She also worked on the 1969 Apollo 11 mission to the Moon. Later, her expertise supported the Space Shuttle program and the Earth Resources Satellite. She even contributed to long-term plans for human missions to Mars. Throughout these decades, she coauthored 26 scientific papers. Her work helped establish confidence in the new digital technology used by NASA.

Because of her brilliance, Johnson received many of the highest honors in the United States. In 2015, President Barack Obama awarded her the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

In 2016, she received the Silver Snoopy Award, which NASA gives for outstanding contributions to flight safety. She also earned a NASA Group Achievement Award. In 2019, the United States Congress awarded her the Congressional Gold Medal. Her life was so impactful that she was posthumously inducted into the National Women's Hall of Fame in 2021.

Today, Johnson’s legacy is preserved through various scientific institutions. NASA named the Katherine G. Johnson Computational Research Facility at the Langley Research Center in her honor.

Another facility in West Virginia was also renamed for her. Her story has even inspired culture, appearing in the film Hidden Figures.
