Hopper's career progressed through several distinct stages of technological development. She began as one of the first programmers for the Harvard Mark I computer. 
Hopper's mathematical background provided the foundation for her technical breakthroughs. She was born in New York City in 1906 and was a very curious child. At age seven, she famously dismantled seven alarm clocks to see how they worked. She earned a bachelor's degree in mathematics and physics from Vassar College in 1928. She later earned a master's degree from Yale University in 1930. In 1934, she completed her Ph.D. in mathematics at Yale. Her dissertation was titled "New Types of Irreducibility Criteria." Before her computing career, she served as a professor of mathematics at Vassar College.
Her service in the United States Navy was also a major part of her life. During World War II, she volunteered for the Navy Reserve as a member of the WAVES. Although she was initially turned down due to age and weight requirements, she eventually joined the Navy in 1943. She graduated first in her class from the Naval Reserve Midshipmen's School in 1944. She served as a lieutenant, junior grade, on the Harvard Mark I programming staff. Hopper eventually rose to the rank of captain in 1973. In 1983, she was promoted to the rank of commodore on the retired list. 
The creation of COBOL was a collaborative effort that changed the industry. In 1959, Hopper served as a technical consultant for the CODASYL consortium. This group held a conference to define a new, machine-independent language. Many of Hopper's former employees helped define the language. COBOL was built using English words and was based on her previous work with FLOW-MATIC. This language became the most widely used business language for many years. Because of her work, computers became accessible to people who were not professional mathematicians. This shift allowed businesses to use computers for data processing on a massive scale.
Hopper's legacy is recognized through many honors and namesakes. She was awarded 40 honorary degrees from universities around the world. In 1991, she received the National Medal of Technology. In 2016, she was posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Her name is used to honor her in science and technology today. A U.S. Navy guided-missile destroyer is named after her. The Cray XE6 "Hopper" supercomputer and the Nvidia "Hopper" GPU architecture also carry her name. Even the University of Pennsylvania dedicated a marker to her in 2024.
