They possess cloven hooves and cannon bones similar to bovids. Their teeth are also distinct. They lack upper incisors and upper canines. Instead, they have a tough, horny pad. Their cheek teeth are selenodont, meaning they are shaped for grinding plants.

The evolutionary history of the Giraffidae is recorded through an intensive fossil record. Many extinct groups belong to a clade known as Giraffomorpha. This group includes taxa such as the palaeomerycids, prolibytherids, and climacoceratids. Scientists debate the exact relationships between these extinct animals. One hypothesis suggests climacoceratids were ancestors to the large, antler-like sivatheres. Another theory posits that climacoceratids were simply a sister clade to giraffids.
