Another relative, *Giraffokeryx*, appeared on the Indian subcontinent about 15 to 12 million years ago. A vital transitional fossil is *Samotherium*, which lived roughly 14 million years ago. The cervical vertebrae of *Samotherium* were intermediate in structure between an okapi and a modern giraffe. Eventually, *Bohlinia* appeared in Europe and China, closely resembling modern giraffes before moving into Africa.

Major environmental shifts drove the evolution of the modern giraffe. About 8 million years ago, habitats changed from extensive forests to more open environments. Tropical plants were replaced by arid C4 plants, creating the dry savannahs seen today. This shift toward open habitats is believed to be the main driver for giraffe evolution. Some researchers suggest that eating acacia species may have exposed ancestors to toxins. These toxins might have caused higher mutation rates, which could have accelerated their evolution.

While different methods can lead to different taxonomic conclusions, the genetic data continues to reveal the deep history of these magnificent animals.
