He was born in September 129 CE in a city called Pergamon. This city was in what is now Turkey. His father, Aelius Nicon, was a wealthy architect with many interests. He wanted Galen to study philosophy or politics. However, a dream changed everything for the family. In the dream, the god Asclepius told Nicon to send his son to study medicine.

Galen used a special way to study how bodies work. At that time, the Roman Empire forbade people from studying human bodies. To learn, Galen looked at animals instead. He first studied Barbary apes because they had very vivid facial expressions. Later, he used pigs for his research. He believed animal anatomy was very similar to human anatomy.

His work on how the body works was not fully challenged until much later. In the 1600s, a man named Ibn al-Nafis discovered how blood moves through the lungs. Later, in 1543, Andreas Vesalius published new books about human bodies. These new books helped doctors see where Galen was right and where he was wrong. Many of Galen's books were written in Greek.

We can see how Galen's work connects to medicine today. He believed a doctor must observe and reason to help people. This is still how doctors work in hospitals now. He also lived through a huge sickness called the Antonine Plague. This plague was likely smallpox and it affected many people in Rome.

Born in September 129 CE in Pergamon, he became one of antiquity's most accomplished medical researchers. His work influenced many scientific disciplines, including anatomy, physiology, pathology, pharmacology, and neurology. Galen believed that a great physician must also be a philosopher. He sought a middle ground between two medical schools: the rationalists and the empiricists. While rationalists focused on theory, empiricists focused on experience. Galen used direct observation, dissection, and vivisection to combine these two approaches.

Galen's medical understanding was built upon the theory of the four humors. This theory, found in the Hippocratic corpus, suggested that the body relied on four liquids: blood, phlegm, black bile, and yellow bile. To study how these worked, Galen performed extensive anatomical research. Because the Roman Empire strictly forbade human dissection, he had to find other ways to learn. He initially studied Barbary apes because their facial expressions were very vivid. He later switched to studying pigs to avoid legal prosecution. Galen believed that animal anatomy had a strong consilience, or agreement, with human anatomy.

His career was marked by significant professional successes and travels. After a liberal education in philosophy and logic, he studied at an asclepeion, a healing temple. Following his father's death in 148 CE, Galen traveled to places like Alexandria to study various medical schools. In 157 CE, he served as a physician to the gladiators of the High Priest of Asia. He used these experiences to study living anatomy and the treatment of severe trauma. Galen viewed wounds as "windows into the body." His careful attention to hygiene and diet helped reduce gladiator deaths from sixty to only five during his tenure.

Galen eventually moved to Rome in 162 CE, where he became a famous practitioner. He often clashed with other doctors who relied on mysticism and divination rather than reason. Galen argued that to diagnose a patient, one must observe and reason. This tension was so great that he once feared for his life due to potential poisoning. Despite these conflicts, his reputation grew, and he eventually served as a personal physician to several Roman emperors. He provided medical care to the imperial heir Commodus and later to Emperor Septimius Severus.

During his time in Rome, Galen witnessed the devastating Antonine Plague. This outbreak, which likely was smallpox, struck the Mediterranean world in the late 160s CE. Because of his close observation of the disease, it was often called the Plague of Galen. The plague was a massive event that affected the Roman leadership. For example, the emperor Lucius Verus died in 169 CE, and Marcus Aurelius died in 180 CE, both from the disease. During one pestilence under Commodus, the plague reportedly killed 2,000 people every day in Rome.

Galen's physiological theories dominated Western medical science for more than 1,300 years. His views on the circulatory system remained largely unchallenged for centuries. It was not until the 13th century that Ibn al-Nafis published a commentary describing the discovery of pulmonary circulation. Furthermore, Galen's anatomical reports were not fully contested until 1543. That year, Andreas Vesalius published *De humani corporis fabrica*, which provided new illustrations of human dissections. These new observations eventually required doctors to adjust Galen's original theories to fit the new evidence.

Today, we see Galen's legacy in the way modern medicine functions. His insistence on using observation and reasoning to treat patients is a cornerstone of medical practice. Many of his writings have been preserved through Greek and Latin translations.

Even though some works attributed to him were later found to be spurious, his impact on logic and science remains clear. He bridged the gap between ancient philosophy and the systematic study of the human body.
