For a very long time, doctors learned from old books written by a man named Galen. These books were treated as perfect, even when they were wrong. Vesalius changed everything by looking at the truth for himself. He believed that seeing was the only way to truly learn about the body.

His way of working was very different from other teachers. Most professors would read from a book while a helper did the actual work. Vesalius did the work with his own hands instead. He performed dissections, which means looking inside a body to see the parts.

He used these dissections as his main way to teach students. He even urged his students to do the work themselves. This hands-on method helped people understand how humans are built.

By looking closely, Vesalius found many mistakes in the old books. He discovered that Galen had mostly studied animals like monkeys. Because of this, Galen made errors about human bodies. For example, Galen thought the human lower jaw was two bones. Vesalius proved it is actually just one bone. In the past, a professor would read from a book while a barber-surgeon performed a dissection. The professor rarely touched the body. Vesalius changed this entire process. He performed the dissections himself. He also urged his students to handle the organs and bones. This direct contact allowed for much more accurate learning. By doing the work with his own hands, he could verify every detail. This approach turned anatomy into a modern descriptive science.

Vesalius discovered that many classical medical ideas were incorrect. He realized that Galen had never actually dissected a human body. Because Roman law forbade human dissection, Galen studied animals instead. He used Barbary macaques, which are types of monkeys, to learn about anatomy. Galen assumed these animals were structurally similar to humans. This led to many significant errors in medical books. Vesalius proved that human anatomy has unique features not found in animals.

One major discovery involved the human jaw. Galen believed the lower jaw, or mandible, consisted of two separate bones. Vesalius proved through dissection that it is actually just one single bone. He also examined the brain and blood vessels. He discovered that humans lack the rete mirabile. This is a network of blood vessels found at the base of the brain in sheep and other animals. Vesalius also studied the heart and its ventricles. Galen claimed there were holes connecting the heart's chambers to move blood. Vesalius could not find these holes, though he did not fully disprove Galen's blood theories. He suggested blood might diffuse through the partition between the ventricles.

In 1543, Vesalius published his most influential work.

It was titled *De humani corporis fabrica*, which means "On the fabric of the human body." This seven-volume masterpiece contained 273 intricate illustrations. Many experts believe the artist Johan van Calcar helped create these plates. The book was a breakthrough in medical publishing. It was so detailed that pirated editions appeared almost immediately. Vesalius also worked on a famous skeletal preparation in 1543.
