There are several distinct types of fossil fuels. Coal and methane often form from terrestrial plants. Many coal fields date back to the Carboniferous period. Petroleum and natural gas typically originate from aquatic phytoplankton and zooplankton. Some materials, like oil shale, contain kerogen which can be heated to produce synthetic crude oil. These fuels are extracted and burned to provide energy. This energy can power heat engines, generate electricity via steam turbine generators, or be used for direct heating and lighting.
