We can also change behaviors, such as using public transport or cycling instead of driving cars.

However, we must watch for the "rebound effect," where consumers use saved money to purchase more energy-intensive goods, such as larger homes or vehicles.

Achieving these goals requires significant investment and policy changes. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) estimates that 2.5% of world gross domestic product (GDP) must be invested in the energy system annually between 2016 and 2035 to limit warming to 1.5 °C. Governments play a vital role by funding research into new technologies and building infrastructure for electrification. They can also use policies like carbon pricing or phasing out fossil fuel subsidies to encourage clean energy. By 2025, investment in the energy transition had already grown to about twice the amount invested in fossil fuels.

Finally, the move toward sustainability connects to broader global development goals. The United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 7 specifically calls for universal access to affordable, reliable, and modern energy by 2030. This includes providing clean cooking facilities to improve human health and gender equality. As wind and solar market shares continue to grow, new technologies like hydrogen fuel may help power processes that are difficult to electrify. By integrating these diverse technologies and policies, society can work toward a system that supports both economic growth and a stable climate.
