In a Wankel engine, the housing remains stationary. Only the internal rotor moves in a circular path to facilitate the combustion process. Wankel's personal history is deeply connected to the political turbulence of 20th-century Germany. During the early 1920s, he joined several radical antisemitic organizations. He became a member of the Nazi Party (NSDAP) in 1922. Wankel also led youth groups that conducted paramilitary training and scouting games. His political life was marked by intense internal conflict. In 1931, he was appointed leader of the Hitler Youth in Baden. However, he clashed with the regional leader, Robert Heinrich Wagner, over military versus political training. This dispute led to Wankel's expulsion from the party in October 1932. Following the Nazi seizure of power in 1933, Wagner had Wankel arrested and imprisoned. He was only released in September 1933 after intervention by Adolf Hitler and his economic adviser, Wilhelm Keppler. Wankel later joined the SS in 1940, but his membership was revoked two years later.

Despite these political complications, Wankel's technical career continued through various stages. During World War II, he developed specialized seals and rotary valves. These components were used for German navy torpedoes and air force aircraft. He also worked with major companies like BMW and Daimler-Benz. After the war, French occupation authorities closed his laboratory and prohibited his work. He was imprisoned by French authorities for several months in 1945. His technical resurgence began in 1951 when he received funding from Goetze AG. This allowed him to establish a new Technical Development Center in Lindau. He eventually partnered with NSU Motorenwerke AG to develop his engine prototype. The first running prototype was completed on February 1, 1957, producing 21 horsepower.

The commercial success of the engine came through widespread licensing. Wankel founded Wankel GmbH in 1958 to manage these agreements. This allowed him to earn royalties from many global manufacturers. By 1961, companies like Daimler-Benz and Yanmar Diesel Co. had licensed the technology. In 1971, Wankel sold his share of these royalties for 50 million Deutschmarks. This amount is approximately 87 million Euros when adjusted for inflation to 2021. His engine was used in many famous vehicles, such as the NSU Ro 80.
