His most famous invention was the Benz Patent-Motorwagen.

This machine worked using a four-stroke engine. A four-stroke engine is a type of motor that uses fuel to create movement. The engine sat between the rear wheels. It used two roller chains to send power to the axle. This allowed the vehicle to move without any horses pulling it. Benz also invented many other parts like the spark plug and the carburetor.

Benz grew up in a place called Mühlburg in Germany. He was born on November 25, 1844. His father was a locomotive driver named Johann Georg Benz. Sadly, his father died when Carl was only two years old. His mother worked very hard to give him a great education. Carl studied very hard at a technical school. He graduated in 1864 when he was only 19 years old. He spent many years training in different engineering jobs.

In 1885, Benz finished his first motorwagen. He received a patent for it in 1886.

His wife, Bertha Benz, was also very important to his success. In August 1888, she took the first long-distance car trip.

Carl Benz was a German engine designer and automotive engineer. He is widely regarded as the "father of the car" and the "father of the automobile industry." His most significant achievement was the Benz Patent-Motorwagen. This vehicle, created in 1885, is considered the first practical, modern automobile. It was also the first car to be put into series production. Benz's work changed how humans travel by replacing animal power with internal combustion engines.

Benz's early life was marked by both challenge and academic success. He was born Karl Friedrich Michael Vaillant on November 25, 1844, in Mühlburg, Germany. His father, Johann Georg Benz, was a locomotive driver. When Carl was only two years old, his father died of pneumonia. To honor his father, his name was later changed to Karl Friedrich Benz. Despite living in near poverty, his mother provided him with a strong education.

He attended a scientific Lyceum at age nine and later studied at the Karlsruhe polytechnical school. He graduated in 1864 at the age of 19.

Before building cars, Benz gained experience through various engineering roles. He worked as a draftsman and designer in a scales factory in Mannheim. He also worked for a bridge building company in Pforzheim and an iron construction company in Vienna. In 1871, he joined August Ritter to launch an iron foundry and mechanical workshop in Mannheim. This business faced early troubles when tools were impounded due to Ritter's unreliability. Benz's fiancée, Bertha Ringer, helped save the business by buying out Ritter's share using her dowry. They married on July 20, 1872.

Benz's technical expertise led to several critical inventions. He focused on creating a reliable petrol two-stroke engine, which he finished in 1879. He later developed the Benz Patent-Motorwagen, which used a four-stroke engine.

This engine was a gas or petrol internal combustion engine. It was horizontally mounted between the rear wheels. The vehicle featured a tubular steel frame and wire wheels. Power was transmitted to the rear axle using two roller chains. Benz also patented essential components like the carburetor, the spark plug, the clutch, the gear shift, and the water radiator.

The Motorwagen underwent several important versions. The 1885 version was difficult to control and once collided with a wall during a demonstration. In 1886, Benz received a patent for the "automobile fueled by gas." He first publicly drove the car on July 3, 1886, reaching a top speed of 16 km/h. The Model 2 was created the following year with modifications. In 1889, he introduced the Model 3, which featured wooden wheels. This model was shown at the Paris Expo that same year.

Bertha Benz played a vital role in proving the automobile's utility. In August 1888, she took the first long-distance automobile trip.

She drove a Model 3 from Mannheim to Pforzheim to visit her mother. During this journey, she had to find pharmacies to refuel the vehicle. She also solved mechanical problems, such as inventing brake linings by having a shoemaker nail leather onto the brake blocks. This trip acted as a form of "live marketing" to show that cars were practical for travel. Today, the Bertha Benz Memorial Route commemorates her journey.
