Eusthenopteron was a big fish from a long time ago. 
This fish is very special to scientists. It is a lobe-finned fish. This means its fins had strong bones inside. These bones are like our own arm and leg bones. 
Eusthenopteron may have weighed 50 kilograms. It might have eaten smaller fish for food. We even found bone marrow in its bones. Bone marrow is the soft stuff inside bones. This helps us see how fish changed into animals with legs. This change helped lead to the first tetrapods, which are animals with four limbs.

There are many different species of Eusthenopteron. We know of at least seven or eight species. They lived in places like North America and Eurasia. Some species lived in England and Scotland. Others lived in Latvia and Russia. One species is called Eusthenopteron foordi. It was named after Arthur Humphreys Foord. Another is Eusthenopteron jenkinsi, named after Farish Jenkins. 
These fish help us see how life changes. They share traits with the very first land animals. For example, they had internal nostrils called a choana. They also had teeth with folded enamel. We even found bone marrow inside their bones. This might be where bone marrow began in land animals. This fish is a link to the animals we see today.

They also possessed labyrinthodont teeth, which are teeth with infolded enamel. These specific traits are also seen in the earliest known tetrapods.

The pelvic fin contained a femur, a tibia, and a fibula. These six bones are the same types found in the limbs of modern land animals. These bones included epiphyseal growth plates. These plates allowed the bones to grow longer through a process called endochondral ossification.
Scientists have also discovered unique details about their biology through fossilized remains. Researchers found the earliest known evidence of bone marrow in Eusthenopteron. This discovery suggests that bone marrow in tetrapods may have originated in these fish. Their scales, called elasmoid scales, lacked certain structures called odontodes. This loss of dentine and enamel on the scales is a trait shared with more advanced tetrapodomorphs. Additionally, Eusthenopteron did not appear to have a larval stage or a metamorphosis. Even very small specimens show adult-like fin structures, suggesting they developed directly from hatchlings.
The history of studying this genus began in the late 19th century. J. F. Whiteaves first described the genus in 1881. He found a large collection of fish in Miguasha, Quebec, Canada. Since then, about 2,000 specimens have been collected from that site. Between the 1940s and the 1990s, the paleoichthyologist Erik Jarvik performed intensely detailed studies on these fossils. His work focused heavily on specific specimens from the Miguasha collection. This research helped establish the importance of the genus in the fossil record.
Eusthenopteron was a widespread genus with many different species. At least seven to eight species are known from Eurasia and North America. These animals lived near the Equator, which is where the Northern Hemisphere was located at the time. For example, Eusthenopteron foordi lived in the Frasnian of Quebec, Canada. Other species like Eusthenopteron traquairi were found in Scotland. Species such as Eusthenopteron kurshi and Eusthenopteron obruchevi were found in Latvia. The genus also had a presence in Russia and England. 
These fish varied in size and weight depending on the species. Eusthenopteron was generally a medium- to large-sized fish. The species Eusthenopteron foordi was estimated to exceed certain lengths, while Eusthenopteron jenkinsi reached specific sizes. Some estimates suggest the animal may have weighed around 50 kilograms. They likely occupied a role in the food web by eating smaller fish. Their existence helps scientists understand the sequence of adaptations in the Late Devonian. This sequence includes fish like Panderichthys, the limb-like Tiktaalik, and eventually early tetrapods like Acanthostega and Ichthyostega.
