Lewis wrote a big review in 2001. They named a new species called Dinofelis aronoki. That name comes from a phrase in the Turkana language. It means "it was terrible." In 2023, a new species was named Dinofelis werdelini. This name honors Lars Werdelin.

There were many different kinds of Dinofelis. Dinofelis aronoki was the largest known species. It lived in Kenya and Ethiopia. Dinofelis barlowi was much smaller. It was only 70 cm high. This species lived in Europe and Asia. Dinofelis cristata lived in India and China. Its skull looked a lot like modern Panthera cats. Dinofelis darti lived in South Africa. Dinofelis is an extinct genus of machairodontine cats. These are often called saber-toothed cats. They belonged to a group known as the tribe Metailurini. These predators were widespread across many continents. They lived in Europe, Asia, Africa, and North America. Most lived between 5 million and 1.2 million years ago. This time period covers the early Pliocene to the early Pleistocene. Some fossils from Lothagam might be even older. They may date back to 8 million years ago during the Late Miocene.

Scientists have worked for a long time to understand these cats. Otto Zdansky first named the genus in 1924. He named the species Dinofelis abeli. Other species were named later, such as Felis diastemata and Meganthereon barlowi. These were eventually moved into the genus Therailurus. Later, Therailurus was considered a junior synonym of Dinofelis. In 2001, paleontologists Lars Werdelin and Margaret E. Lewis published a major review. They named a new species, Dinofelis aronoki. The name comes from the phrase "arono ki." In the language of the Turkana people, this means "it was terrible." In 2023, researchers named Dinofelis werdelini. This name honors the paleontologist Lars Werdelin.

These cats varied greatly in their physical size. Their size range was similar to the modern Panthera genus. Some species were large, like a jaguar. Other species were much smaller. Some fossils suggest a connection to early human ancestors. In South Africa, remains of Dinofelis are found near hominid fossils. These include Australopithecus africanus. Some fossils show Dinofelis remains mixed with other large animals. There are also Paranthropus skull fossils with canine holes. This suggests Dinofelis might have preyed on robust hominids. However, carbon isotope ratios suggest this was likely rare. Other predators like leopards and Megantereon were also present in the environment.

The disappearance of Dinofelis is linked to environmental changes. Scientists believe the gradual loss of forest environments played a role. This happened at the start of the ice age.
