Derby played a vital role in the Industrial Revolution. In 1717, John Lombe and George Sorocold built Britain's first water-powered silk mill. 
The 19th century saw Derby emerge as a massive engineering hub. In 1840, the North Midland Railway established its works in the city. When several lines merged to form the Midland Railway, Derby became its headquarters. 

In the 20th century, Derby transitioned into modern high-tech manufacturing. Rolls-Royce opened a car and aircraft factory in the city in 1907. 
Beyond industry, Derby has a unique cultural and social history. For centuries, the town held Shrovetide football. This was a rough game played between the St Peter's and All Saints parishes. The game was so violent that it was banned in 1846.
