Chelyabinsk is a large city in Russia.

Chelyabinsk has a long history. Long ago, an ancient group lived near the city. They lived in a place called Arkaim. In 1736, a fortress was built there. The city grew fast when new railways were made. In the 1930s, it became a center for big factories. During World War II, it made many tanks. Some people even called it Tankograd, which means Tank City.
In 2013, a bright meteor flew over the city. It exploded in the sky. The flash was brighter than the sun. Fragments of the meteor fell near Lake Chebarkul. Today, many people study at big schools there. One is the South Ural State University.

The city grew in many different stages. Long ago, an advanced civilization lived in the area. They lived in ancient towns like Arkaim. These sites had connected houses and strong walls. Later, in 1736, a man named Colonel Tevkelev built a fortress. He built it on a Bashkir village to protect trade routes. By 1787, the fortress became an official town. The city's layout was planned carefully to make it organized.
Chelyabinsk changed quickly because of new transport. In 1892, a new railway connected the city to Moscow. Construction on the Trans-Siberian Railway also began there. For 15 years, fifteen million people traveled through the city. This was a tenth of all people in Russia then. The city became a major center for trade. It even had a factory for packing tea. People sometimes called it the Chicago of the Urals because it grew so fast.
In the 1930s, the city became a center for big industry. Many large factories were built during this time. During World War II, the city's role grew even more. Many factories moved there to stay safe from the war. The city made 18,000 tanks and millions of pieces of ammunition.
Something amazing happened in the city in 2013. A huge meteor flew over the Ural Mountains. It exploded in the sky with a bright flash. The light was brighter than the sun. The explosion was very powerful. It was 20 to 30 times stronger than the bomb used in Hiroshima. Fragments of the meteor fell into Lake Chebarkul. Today, the city is a place for learning too.
Chelyabinsk is a major administrative and industrial center in Russia. It serves as the capital of the Chelyabinsk Oblast. The city is the seventh-largest in Russia, with a population exceeding 1.1 million people.

The history of the region begins long before the modern city. Archaeologists have found ruins of the ancient town of Arkaim nearby. This site belonged to the Sintashta culture. This was a relatively advanced civilization that existed since the 2nd millennium BC. They are believed to have been of proto-Indo-Iranian origin. The Sintashta-Petrovka cultural area includes twenty-three recognized archaeological sites. These sites often resemble towns with round, square, or oval shapes. They featured fortified walls, connected houses, and evidence of early metallurgy. Researchers believe these people spoke a language related to the ancestors of the Indo-Iranian language family.
Modern Chelyabinsk began with a military purpose. In 1736, Colonel Alexey Tevkelev founded a fortress named Chelyaba. He built it on the site of a Bashkir village. The fortress was intended to protect trade routes from Bashkir outlaws. The city eventually gained official town status in 1787. The urban layout was carefully planned to organize the growing population. Early streets like Sibirskaya were formed to connect the fortress to the Siberian tract. Over time, the city developed a central business district with many courtyards and administrative buildings.
A massive shift occurred in the late 19th century due to transportation. In 1892, the Samara-Zlatoust Railway was completed. This linked Chelyabinsk to Moscow and European Russia. During the same year, construction began on the Trans-Siberian Railway. For fifteen years, over fifteen million people traveled through the city. This represented one-tenth of the entire Russian population at that time. The city also became a trade hub due to a "customs fracture." This meant duties were imposed on goods moving between European and Asian Russia. This led to the rise of mills and tea-packing factories. Because of this rapid growth, people called it "the Chicago of the Urals."
The 1930s marked the era of heavy industrialization. Large facilities like the Chelyabinsk Tractor Plant and the Chelyabinsk Metallurgical Plant were built. During World War II, the city's importance grew even further. To protect manufacturing from the advancing German military, many Soviet industries moved to this region. This influx brought thousands of workers and new factories. Chelyabinsk became a massive producer of military equipment. The city produced 18,000 tanks and over 17 million units of ammunition.
In recent history, the city experienced a rare and powerful natural event. On February 15, 2013, a superbolide meteor flew over the Ural Mountains. The meteor exploded at an altitude of about 30 kilometers. The flash was momentarily brighter than the sun. The explosion released about 500 kilotons of TNT. This is 20 to 30 times more energy than the atomic bomb used in Hiroshima. The shock wave from the explosion injured over 1,000 people, mostly through broken glass. Fragments of the meteor fell into Lake Chebarkul. The city avoided much larger destruction because the meteor entered at a shallow angle.
Today, Chelyabinsk remains a vital part of the Ural economy. Industry accounts for almost 40% of the gross municipal product. This includes heavy sectors like metallurgy and military production. The city is also a center for higher education. It is home to several institutions, including South Ural State University.
