The geography of the area is defined by its hills and water. The River Lea begins in the Leagrave area of the town. This area is surrounded by Great Bramingham Wood. This is an ancient woodland with records dating back 400 years. The Chiltern Hills consist of Cretaceous chalk. They also contain deposits from the last ice age. Because of the hilly terrain, major roads like the M1 and A6 run through the town. The climate is a temperate marine climate. It is influenced by the warming Gulf Stream. However, Luton is often 1–2 degrees Celsius cooler than surrounding towns. This is due to its position in the hills.

Luton has a history stretching back to the sixth century. The Anglo-Saxons are believed to have founded the settlement. In the 8th century, the name appeared as Lygetun. This meant "town on the River Lea." The Domesday Book recorded the town as Loitone and Lintone. In the 12th century, construction began on St Mary's Church.

Later, the town became a center for the motor industry. Vauxhall Motors opened its plant in 1905.
