This word is thought to mean "opening of a large river." During French colonial rule, the city was called Tourane. This name came from a rough transliteration of local names. In 1650, maps by Alexandre de Rhodes showed the area as Cua Han.

During the 17th century, the land near the Hai Van Pass was called Kean. This name likely refers to the Han market. The city was also known by several literary names used by Confucian scholars.

The history of the region involves many different kingdoms. The area was part of the Champa kingdom, established in 192 AD. The Cham people had a large sphere of influence. Their capital, Indrapura, was located about 40 kilometres from Da Nang. In the 10th century, Champa faced conflict with the Dai Viet kingdom.
