Later, the Champa civilization left ruins like the city of Hoa Chau. In 1306, the King of Champa ceded two prefectures to Vietnam. These were the Ô and Lý prefectures. They were renamed Thuận and Hóa prefectures. This area became known as the Thuận Hóa region.

Huế became a major political center through many changes. In 1687, it became a provincial capital. It served as the capital of Đàng Trong from 1738 to 1775. The Nguyễn dynasty later made it the capital of Vietnam from 1802 to 1945. During this time, it was the site of the Imperial Citadel. The city was also known as Phú Xuân. In 1899, the name was officially changed to Huế. During the French colonial period, it served as the capital of the protectorate of Annam. The city saw significant fighting during the Vietnam War. It was the second-most northerly province of South Vietnam.
