If Gigantoraptor erlianensis is indeed a caenagnathid, it was the largest of the group. It could reach 30 feet in length and weigh up to 3,500 pounds. Other species like Anzu wyliei were also much larger than a human.

Researchers use different methods to classify these animals into subgroups. One subgroup is called Caenagnathinae, which includes species closely related to Caenagnathus collinsi. Another subgroup is Elmisaurinae, which includes species more closely related to Elmisaurus rarus. These classifications help scientists map out the family tree. While only a few species were recognized before the 2010s, new discoveries may increase that number to ten. Many species remain difficult to confirm because their remains are often fragmentary. For instance, Caenagnathus sternbergi was described using only a jaw bone.
