The discovery of this animal is a remarkable story of modern paleontology. Around 2004, a high school student named Guillermo Aguirre-Zabala found fossils near a railroad in Comallo. This location is in the Patagonia region of Argentina. 

The holotype specimen provides immense scientific value because it is so complete. It includes a nearly complete skull, a left tarsometatarsus, and a single toe bone called a phalanx. 
Kelenken lived in a specific type of environment that shaped its evolution. The Collón Curá Formation shows that open environments were very common during the Colloncuran age. These open landscapes allowed large, running animals to thrive. The formation contains fossils of many different creatures, including mammals, reptiles, amphibians, and fish. This diversity shows a complex ecosystem where Kelenken acted as a primary hunter. The bird's ability to run and strike made it perfectly suited for these wide-open spaces.
