After breaking through, the Soviet troops surrounded the city. This meant the German defenders could not get help from the outside. Then, the fighting moved into the streets of Berlin itself.

German leaders tried to prepare for the attack.

General Gotthard Heinrici was put in charge of the defense. He was a skilled tactician. He used a plan called Operation Clausewitz to protect the city. Engineers even turned the land near the Oder River into a swamp. They did this by releasing water from a reservoir. This was meant to slow down enemy tanks. They also built many trenches and bunkers to hide soldiers.

The numbers involved in this battle were very large.

The Battle of Berlin was a massive military operation during the final months of World War II in Europe. The Soviet Union officially called it the Berlin Strategic Offensive Operation. It was also known as the Fall of Berlin. This battle was a decisive moment that helped end the war on the European continent.

The conflict was driven by the Soviet goal to capture the German capital and secure strategic assets. These assets included the location of Adolf Hitler and the German nuclear weapons program. While the Soviets sought the city, the Western Allies focused on other areas. General Dwight D. Eisenhower, the Supreme Commander of the Western Allied Expeditionary Force, decided not to launch a direct attack on Berlin. He wanted to avoid excessive casualties and prevent friendly fire between the different Allied armies.

The Soviet offensive was organized into several massive fronts. The 1st Belorussian Front, led by Marshal Georgy Zhukov, attacked from the east and north. The 1st Ukrainian Front, led by Marshal Ivan Konev, advanced from the south. A third front moved to overrun German forces in the north. These forces worked together to encircle the city.

Before reaching the city, the Red Army had to win several major battles. They fought at the Seelow Heights and at Halbe to clear the way. These victories allowed the Soviet forces to surround Berlin completely. Once encircled, the German defenders were cut off from outside help. This encirclement was a key step in the Soviet plan to seize control of the capital.

German defense preparations began in early 1945. General Gotthard Heinrici was appointed to lead the defense under Operation Clausewitz.

Heinrici was a skilled defensive tactician. He decided to fortify the Seelow Heights, which overlooked the Oder River. This area was a vital point where the main east-west Autobahn crossed the river. To slow down Soviet tanks, German engineers turned the Oder flood plain into a swamp. They did this by releasing water from an upstream reservoir. The Germans also built three belts of defensive positions. These included anti-tank ditches, gun emplacements, and a network of trenches and bunkers. These defenses were intended to protect the outskirts of the city.

The Battle of the Seelow Heights was one of the last major pitched battles of the war. It took place from April 16 to April 19, 1945.

Nearly one million Red Army soldiers were deployed to break through this "Gate to Berlin." They used more than 20,000 tanks and artillery pieces. They faced about 100,000 German soldiers and 1,200 tanks and guns. The fighting was intense and resulted in heavy losses on both sides. The Soviet forces eventually broke through the final German lines on April 19. This breakthrough destroyed the German eastern front line. It allowed the Soviet armies to drive a wedge between German Army Group Vistula and Army Group Centre.

The scale of the Soviet forces was enormous. The three Soviet fronts included 2.5 million men. They also utilized 6,250 tanks and 7,500 aircraft. Their artillery included 41,600 pieces, including 3,255 Katyusha rocket launchers. These rocket launchers were nicknamed "Stalin's Organ."

In contrast, the German garrison in Berlin was disorganized. It consisted of depleted army divisions and the Waffen-SS. It also included poorly trained members of the Volkssturm and the Hitler Youth.

On April 20, 1945, Soviet artillery began a massive shelling of the Berlin city centre. This bombardment continued until the city surrendered.

The battle reached its climax in the streets of Berlin. On April 23, General Helmuth Weidling took command of the remaining German forces.

Over the next week, the Red Army gradually took control of the entire city. On April 30, 1945, Adolf Hitler killed himself. The German garrison officially surrendered on May 2.

However, fighting did not stop immediately everywhere. Some German units continued to fight in the northwest and southwest. They fought until the end of the war in Europe on May 8. Some of these units fought westward to surrender to the Western Allies instead of the Soviets.

The Battle of Berlin had lasting consequences for the world. It determined the post-war boundaries and influence in Europe. Berlin became part of a special zone under Soviet influence. The battle also highlighted the massive industrial and human cost of the conflict. The sheer number of tanks, aircraft, and soldiers involved showed the total nature of the war.
