By 2017, the Cat Classification Task Force officially grouped these populations into the single subspecies Panthera leo leo. 
The disappearance of the Barbary lion was driven by human activity. The spread of firearms and the use of bounties for shooting lions caused a massive decline. By the mid-19th century, the population had dropped significantly. In Libya, they disappeared from the coast by the start of the 18th century. In Tunisia, they were gone by 1890. In Algeria, lions vanished from several regions between 1890 and 1893. The last recorded shooting of a wild Barbary lion occurred in 1942 near Tizi n'Tichka in Morocco. 
Despite their disappearance from the wild, these lions left a significant mark on history and science. Fossils found in the Bizmoune cave near Essaouira date back 100,000 to 110,000 years. In the Middle Ages, Barbary lions were even kept in the menagerie at the Tower of London. DNA testing on skulls from that era confirmed they lived there between 1280 and 1480. 
Understanding the Barbary lion helps scientists study how animals move and change over time. A 2008 study of 357 lion samples suggested that a major group of lions developed in East Africa. This group likely traveled north and west about 118,000 years ago. This movement helped explain how lions became spread across Africa and West Asia. Even though the wild Barbary lion is gone, their genetic legacy remains. Many lions currently living in zoos around the world likely carry Barbary lion genes from their ancestors.
