Today, tigers face many problems. They are losing the places where they live. Some tigers are hard to find in the wild. People work hard to keep them safe. We must help protect these amazing animals.

Tigers live in many kinds of forests. Some live in cold forests. Others live in warm, leafy forests.

Tigers usually live alone. They stay in a home range. This is an area of land they defend.

A male tiger's land may overlap with many females. Mothers have two or three cubs. The cubs stay with their mother for two years. Then they find their own homes.

Tigers are apex predators. This means they are at the top of the food chain. They hunt animals like deer by using an ambush. This is a way of hiding and then jumping out.

Today, tigers face big threats. They are losing their homes because of forest loss. They are also at risk from poaching. Poaching is when people hunt them illegally. Tigers are listed as Endangered. This means they are at risk of disappearing.

Scientists have studied tigers for a very long time. In 1758, Carl Linnaeus gave them the name Felis tigris. He used the name Felis for all cats back then. Later, in 1929, Reginald Innes Pocock moved them to the genus Panthera. This is the same group that includes lions and leopards. Some fossils of tiger ancestors were found in China in 1924. These fossils are called Panthera palaeosinensis. Scientists use DNA to learn how tigers changed over millions of years.

Tigers live in many different types of forests across Asia. Some live in cold, pine forests in the Russian Far East.

Others live in warm, leafy forests in India and Southeast Asia. There are many different types of tigers, called subspecies. For example, the Bengal tiger lives in the Indian subcontinent.

Some tigers, like the Javan and Bali tigers, are now extinct. The South China tiger also lives only in captivity today.

It is important to know that tigers face many hard jobs today. They are listed as Endangered on the IUCN Red List. This means they are at high risk of disappearing. Their homes are being destroyed by deforestation, which is when forests are cut down.

They also face poaching, which is illegal hunting for their fur. Tigers can sometimes get into fights with humans if their prey is scarce. Many countries now use patrols and special plans to protect them. They even build wildlife corridors to help tigers move safely between forest areas.

The tiger, known scientifically as Panthera tigris, is a massive cat native to the continent of Asia.

As an apex predator, the tiger occupies the highest level of the food chain in its ecosystem. This means it hunts other animals without being hunted by other predators. Tigers primarily hunt ungulates, which are hoofed mammals like deer. To catch these animals, tigers use a method called ambush. They hide in dense vegetation and then strike suddenly.

Their skulls are robust and resemble those of lions, though they have longer nasal bones and a different jaw structure. They possess 30 strong teeth for hunting.

Tiger taxonomy has changed as scientific understanding has evolved. In 1758, Carl Linnaeus first described the species as Felis tigris. At that time, the genus Felis included all known cats. Later, in 1929, Reginald Innes Pocock moved the tiger to the genus Panthera. This group now includes other large cats like lions, leopards, and jaguars. Genetic studies show that tigers and snow leopards are sister species. This means their evolutionary lineages split from a common ancestor between 2.70 and 3.70 million years ago.

There is ongoing scientific debate regarding tiger subspecies. Historically, nine subspecies were proposed, including the Bengal, Siberian, and Sumatran tigers. In 1999, some scientists argued there were only two subspecies: mainland Asian tigers and island tigers of the Sunda Islands. This two-subspecies view was supported by DNA analysis in 2015. However, a 2023 study found validity for all nine recent subspecies. Currently, the IUCN SSC Cat Specialist Group is reviewing these varied interpretations.

Different tigers have adapted to specific environments across Asia. The Siberian tiger lives in the Russian Far East and has long, dense fur for the cold.

Today, tigers face severe threats that have led to a massive loss of habitat. Since the early 20th century, tigers have lost at least 93% of their historic range. They are listed as Endangered on the IUCN Red List. This is because their range has declined by 53% to 68% since the late 1990s. Major threats include habitat destruction from deforestation and poaching for fur or medicinal parts. Tigers also face human-wildlife conflict when they prey on livestock due to a lack of natural prey.

Conservation efforts are working to protect the remaining tiger populations. Tigers are now legally protected in all countries where they live. National plans include anti-poaching patrols and population monitoring. Some countries have established wildlife corridors to connect fragmented habitats. Scientists are also planning tiger reintroductions in certain areas. These efforts aim to stabilize the species and protect its role in the natural world.
