Finding these fossils was a big job for scientists. In December 1991, Mohammad Arif and Hans Thewissen began looking for fossils. They were working in the Kala Chitta Hills of Pakistan.

They first found a small rib fragment in early 1992. Later, Thewissen found a thigh bone and a shin bone. An hour later, Arif found the rest of the skeleton. At first, they thought it was a different mammal. Then, they found the teeth. These teeth showed it was a cetacean.

They named the species Ambulocetus natans. This name means "swimming walking whale."

There are many important facts about this animal's size. Experts think it was about 13 feet long.

Some estimates say it weighed about 220 kilograms. Others suggested it might be heavier, around 440 kilograms.

The fossils were found in silt and mudstone. By 2002, the skeleton was about 80% complete. This makes it the most complete cetacean from that time. It lived alongside many other creatures. It shared its home with sharks, catfish, and turtles.

It also lived near crocodiles and other early whales like Pakicetus.

The physical structure of Ambulocetus suggests it was a specialized predator. It had a narrow, streamlined body and a long, broad snout. Its eyes were positioned at the very top of its head.

Because of this, scientists hypothesize it behaved much like a modern crocodile. It likely waited near the water's surface to ambush large mammals. It would then use its powerful jaws to clamp onto prey and drown or thrash it. Its ears also showed traits specialized for hearing certain frequencies underwater. However, it is not yet certain if it used these ears for underwater hearing or for bone conduction on land.

Ambulocetus moved through its environment using very different methods on land and in water. In the water, it likely swam much like a modern river otter.

It would tuck in its forelimbs and use its hind limbs for propulsion. It also used spinal undulation, which means it moved its torso and tail in a wave-like motion. Unlike modern whales, Ambulocetus lacked a tail fluke. It may have also had webbed feet to help it swim. When moving on land, it is thought to have walked much like a modern sea lion.

The discovery of these fossils was a major event in paleontology. In December 1991, Mohammad Arif and Hans Thewissen were searching for land mammal fossils in Pakistan.

They were working in the Kala Chitta Hills of the Punjab region. On January 3, 1992, they found a small rib fragment. Later, Thewissen found a femur and a portion of the tibia. An hour after that, Arif discovered the rest of the skeleton.

At first, Thewissen thought the fossils belonged to an anthracobunid. However, he later found teeth that were characteristically cetacean. In 1994, the team published their formal description of the species, *Ambulocetus natans*.

Scientists have used various methods to estimate the size and mass of this ancient animal. Some researchers used the size of the vertebrae, ribs, and limbs to suggest it weighed about as much as a male South American sea lion. Others used the cross-sections of the long bones to estimate a mass of approximately 220 kilograms.

Another estimate based on molar length suggested a mass of about 440 kilograms. In 1998, Philip D. Gingerich estimated a body mass of 1,000 kilograms based on vertebral size. However, some scientists argue this might be unreliable because the vertebrae are unusually robust.

While modern whales are divided into Mysticeti (baleen whales) and Odontoceti (toothed whales), these are known as Neoceti. Ambulocetus is part of the older Archaeoceti group. This group is considered paraphyletic, meaning it includes a common ancestor but not all of its descendants. The discovery of *Ambulocetus* proved that whales moved from land to sea by first developing an otter-like swimming style.
